The book of Proverbs is a guide for pursuing godly wisdom in our daily lives. In this four-week study, we will read a selection of topical proverbs covering different aspects of wisdom, from how to interact with our friends, families, and neighbors, to fearing God and keeping His commands. No matter the subject, these proverbs urge us to wrestle with and reflect on our own response to them. To help you better engage with the proverbs in this reading plan, we have provided you with a short introduction and reflection questions for each day.

We are called to live without fear because the God who made us knows our needs and takes care of us. This doesn’t mean we’ll always have physical security, but it means our identity and future are secure in Christ. As our King, God also rules the affairs of this world with a just hand. He is the only one who can rule with perfect justice because only God can see all things and understand them rightly. He always defends and advocates for the hearts of His people. These proverbs help us understand security and justice from a biblical perspective.

Reflection Questions:

Look at Proverbs 1:33. What benefit is there in listening to God? What is your security?

What does Proverbs 28:5 teach you about justice?

What does the plight of the poor have to do with you? Why is it a matter of godly wisdom to care about the poor and the oppressed?

  1. Jessie Pipp says:

Listening to God brings us peace, wisdom and comfort. Our security is in God and Him alone. Only God truly understands what justice is, the wicked will always get it wrong. To help the oppressed and the poor is honoring to the Lord. To not do so disgraced him —- that was convicting. It has made me think of different ways I may be unknowingly oppressing people.

  2. L V says:

I loved the part about caring for the poor.

  3. Caroline Bridges says:

Listening to god will allow him to tell you stuff you would otherwise not hear about. Only those that worship God understand Justice

  4. Leigh Foxx says:

Lindsey, I had to look up the word Justice. In it’s purest form it is the very Nature of God. It also means to make right. It is a relational term .. people living in a right relationship with God. If I am seeking God then I am looking to be made right and that brings me security. This has been a great Bible study.

  5. Kenzie says:

    (1) Listening and obeying God brings peace and security. My security is Christ, peace, financial stability, music, family, and my occupation.

    (2) Proverbs 28:5 teaches that justice is not understood by wicked people, but those who seek the Lord can understand it.

    (3) If we don’t help those in need we are not helping God. To care for the poor and oppressed gives us an opportunity to show them Christ through us and to be a light in darkness.

  6. Jennifer Anapol says:

I’m so thankful that our God is a God of justice. He will right the wrongs in our world. I’m also thankful that I’m covered by the blood of Jesus, so I can rest securely in his love, knowing I have forgiveness from my sins.

  7. Nhu says:

Listening to God will bring innumerable benefits, it gives us peace, and listening to God will reveal who He is, His characters, His desires, and in Him there are so many hidden wisdom and knowledge that I desire to know. He knows our deep thoughts and Jesus went through suffering in the flesh and He can relate to our suffering now. My security rests in the promises of God when reading His word daily, for He who promises does not waver and He is able to deliver His promises.

The welfare of the poor does affect us. The question on how the plight of the poor has something to do with me, makes me think a lot. We are more connected than we think, me and a poor homeless person out there, oppressed by drugs/alcohols or because of dysfunctional families. I pray God would give me wisdom on how to approach this matter. When I think of these issues of society, it aches me so much.
Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed (Proverbs 19:17 ESV), and the Proverbs 31 Woman verse, “she stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy (Proverbs 31:20). Lord have mercy on us and our community, teach us the way to stretch out our hands.

  8. Nhu says:

Praying for you Kathy and your husband Roger. May the Lord our Healer heal your husband, and may He guard your hearts and minds with the peace that surpasses all understanding.
