Day 33

Jesus Rises from the Grave

from the The Life of Jesus reading plan

Luke 24:1-53

BY Vina Mogg

Sometimes, in everyday conversations, you learn the most about someone. There is something about walking alongside a companion in step, in rhythm, in sync that welcomes vulnerability. When we draw near to a friend by walking beside them, sitting in their presence, or sharing a cup of coffee, our true selves are revealed. In ordinary moments, the extraordinary becomes known.

In today’s reading, we see that Jesus revealed the most extraordinary truths about His character in everyday moments. In Luke 24, Jesus walked alongside two of His followers the day He rose from the grave, a day full of the uproar of confusion. Jesus’s tomb had been found empty that morning, and two of His closest disciples were walking on the road to Emmaus trying to make sense of all that had happened. The stories they had heard, the events they had witnessed, and the questions behind an empty tomb were all conflicting and confusing.

What is our response when we have trouble making sense of the resurrection story, whether believing it ourselves or trying to make it understandable to someone else? Instead of only attempting to convince someone else of this truth, we can live out His presence within us in the everyday. We need to allow Jesus himself to draw near (Luke 24:15).

Jesus met those who were having trouble understanding who He was by walking on the road with them and having conversations with them. Allowing those He walked with to ask questions and recount what they believed. He gave them excerpts of stories they knew from the Scriptures they had learned. It was the truth of the words He spoke that made the difference—the prompting of the Holy Spirit within Him.

Weren’t our hearts burning within us while he was talking with us on the road
and explaining the Scriptures to us?
—Luke 24:32

His Spirit, the whisper of His drawing near, sparks that burning in our hearts. The truth that Jesus is alive and has risen from the grave is revealed not only in words but in the witness of a life changed.

A conversation can arise, causing confusion or controversy regarding the resurrection while walking trails, in the coffee shop, or on a neighbor’s porch. These are places where Jesus Himself can draw near.

For some reason I love how Jesus continues to need to eat. He shows up, having risen from the grave, still in flesh. Still a companion, a friend, someone in need of fellowship and a good meal. The disciples needed this to truly believe. It made it real. I think that can be one of the hard parts about faith is believing what we can’t see. Our Holy Spirit that Jesus left us with is here always, but may not feel like a friend who will commune with us at our table. But maybe if we view the Holy Spirit that way we aren’t wrong? Maybe a friendly, companionship view isn’t too far off from the way we should treat the relationship. We can talk to the Holy Spirit like a friend. We can be brutally honest and bring everything to the table. In this, we can find fellowship and comfort at any moment anywhere.

I got teary at the part that Jesus was taken away in front of the disciples up into the sky. Did they know the goodbye would be so soon? They were excited to have him back, resurrected, alive and well. BUT GOD. Separation hurts, especially when you love someone with all your heart, mind and soul. If I was there, I would probably be bawling. But we don’t have a choice, do we? It’s the Lord’s. “Whither I go, thou cannot follow Me now; but thou shall follow Me afterwards”- John 13:36.
I am asking for prayer for my brother Austin. He has grown estranged. There was some resentment and strife stirred up, causing sadness, disappointment and distancing with various family members. I would appreciate prayers for him and those that were hurt. Thank you for your prayers.

Reading todays scripture nearly brought me to tears. Happy tears. It is the fulfilment of everything that was written. Reading these verses it feels like a weight was lifted. I agree with Cindy, it is so important that he rose from death. Thank you Jesus! Have a wonderful and blessed weekend everyone!

I too really enjoyed this study on the Life of Jesus! What an amazing ending to the story of Christ’s life – He rose from the grave – conquering death, ascended into heaven – where He now sits at the right hand of God, and will one day return, just as He left – in the clouds! Jesus had victory, He is my victor – I too (and you) can have victory, how awesome is that!!

@Rhonda – praying for your grandson Brayden, and for your back pain – I too have back issues so I can relate!
@Dorothy – praying for your situation, that your “family” will truly understand and react lovingly and that they will be able to find someone else to fill in the days you are not able to work.
@Taylor, Sara and all you single ladies who are venturing into new things – may you feel comfortable, fit in and be a blessing to the others in the groups, and they to you!
@Mary Ruiz – I don’t think I’ve seen you comment before – nice to “see you” here through your comment.

  6. Rhonda J. says:

Happy Birthday Pam S!! Hope it is a beautiful day for you!!

@Ramona-thank you…it’s such a blessing to hear “I UNDERSTAND your back issues and concerns!” it gives a little lift to my heart.

@Dorthy..they love you too I’m sure, and will understand!

Knowing that today’s reading would be about Christ’s resurrection I took a moment to sit and contemplate his death and burial from yesterday. So much that had been foretold by prophets and scripture was finished…yet one thing more remained. Without the conquering of death every thing else that had happened (regardless of how miraculous It was) would have left us dwelling in sorrow without hope. Oh how marvelous that the final act of his resurrection… his claiming his kingdom and settling his Holy Spirit into our hearts lifted us from despair to eternal joy.

What a wonderful study. I so very much enjoyed this. Yes we have heard the stories before, but each time I seem to catch something that I didn’t catch before. Rhonda I will pray for Brayden. I understand your back issues and concerns.
