Day 15

In Praise of a Virtuous Woman

from the Proverbs reading plan

Proverbs 31:10-31

BY She Reads Truth

The book of Proverbs is a guide for pursuing godly wisdom in our daily lives. In this four-week study, we will read a selection of topical proverbs covering different aspects of wisdom, from how to interact with our friends, families, and neighbors, to fearing God and keeping His commands. No matter the subject, these proverbs urge us to wrestle with and reflect on our own response to them. To help you better engage with the proverbs in this reading plan, we have provided you with a short introduction and reflection questions for each day.

Proverbs 31 is the most comprehensive description of a godly woman in Scripture. It is also an acrostic poem where each line begins with the next letter in the Hebrew alphabet. These qualities do not belong solely to women. This chapter gives us an ideal personification of virtue—a person “who fears the LORD” (Proverbs 31:30).

Reflection Questions:

This picture of a virtuous woman comes to us from an ancient context. What are some present-day comparisons you could make between the woman in this passage and a godly woman today?

What does this picture of a virtuous woman reveal about what it means to be a virtuous person—man or woman?

Who are godly women in your life? What have you learned from them about wisdom?

So good, I had to go back to read. This is so important to me as well. Being able to laugh about the future…that’s what I desire.

  2. Janniah Evans says:

She fears the Lord and honours him. He strengthens her and gives her grace to do all that she has to. He supplies her needs. She has no worries. Because she is fully submitted to God, she is capable of fulfilling all her duties well.

  3. Jos ByHisGrace says:

She fears the Lord, know Him and obey His words, and thus she has wisdom and discernment in everything she does. She does good ,not evil to everyone. She is trustworthy. She take care of others, but she also take care and respect herself. There is a sense of balance in her life and decisions. She is kind and generous to the poor and needy. She never complain and grumbles.

  4. Stephane Temple says:

She is trustworthy. She is not lazy- anything she does, she works to do it well. She takes care of herself and her people. She is NOT afraid. She is able to carry dignity with her because she does what’s right. She has wisdom and she shares it with kindness. She fears the Lord.
My MIL is especially aware of people and their need for the gospel. She shares so naturally and genuinely with seriously everyone she meets- cashier, someone waiting in line with us, etc. It’s really incredible and gives me confidence to do the same.

  5. Bridgett Hood says:

A woman who shows kindness, is humble, takes care of those around her, genuinely loves those around her, and ultimately fears the Lord.

Constantly putting others before oneself, but taking care of oneself all at the same time.
The proverbs 31 woman can seem so far out of reach, but she’s not. I doubt the woman in these verses was perfect, but she was willing and moldable by God. She listened and sought him everyday to better herself and her family. She worked hard. She never quit. Her husband admires her.

  6. Q Taylor says:

    1) A godly woman is a woman who follows God’s word. She also is a woman of purpose who works to meet the needs of her family. She is selfless, kind and helps where she is needed. A godly woman also uses her time wisely. 2) The picture painted of a virtuous man/woman reveals the characteristics that we should have or strive within ourselves. 3) Godly women I’ve met in my life has includes: My mom.

  7. Abby Clark says:

i was very struck by this verse as well. in the past i have not been at a place to laugh at the future, it has caused me great anxiety, but recently i feel the Lords peace about it
