Day 48

Grace Day

James 3:17

BY She Reads Truth

Take this day as an opportunity to catch up on your reading, pray, and rest in the presence of the Lord.

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without pretense.
James 3:17

As I was digesting this verse (I read the NIV) there are 3 things I picked up on:
    1) “Submissive” often has a negative connotation to it nowadays. I looked it up on the dictionary and it means “obeying without questioning” which is so difficult – but when put into the context of God’s commands/callings it makes a lot of sense! This takes me back to Hebrews 11 which talks all about obedience. Striving to have that level of faith.

    2) these “good fruits” of wisdom all reflect God’s character!

    3) When it says this wisdom from heaven is “first of all pure” – the obvious understanding of “pure” would be morally correct, without evil or sexual immorality – but other meanings of “pure” include “not mixed with other things” and “complete” – which is basically saying that wisdom from heaven is all it ever requires to meet our needs.

    Tricia,
I was also reading this verse in different Bible versions and stumbled upon Bible Hub where you can read commentaries from different versions. You might check that out to help explain more in depth about each word and it’s meaning.
