God Almighty

El Shadday (Hebrew)

Scripture Reading: Genesis 17:1-8, Exodus 6:2-5, 2 Corinthians 6:14-18, Revelation 11:16-19

Description

El Shadday, or “God Almighty,” is a name God uses to describe Himself throughout the Old Testament. He appears to Abraham in Genesis 17 with the greeting, “I am God Almighty.” Then God makes a covenant with Abraham, promising to make him the father of a great nation, even though Abraham was old and his wife was barren. God offered His name, God Almighty, as the guarantee of this improbable promise. Bound up in God’s covenant promise to Abraham is the Lord’s proclamation of His power.

The name God Almighty also appears frequently in the book of Job to emphasize God’s power over all things. El Shadday is a powerful, impressive name for our God.

Emphasis

God’s power over all things

Reflection

What does this name teach me about God?

Thankful that God is all powerful and my situation wether trial or victory is not dependent on my power. For I am weak but his power makes me strong. All glory goes to him!

  3. Cara Jenkins says:

When God Almighty says “I will (fill in the blank)”, He also says “I have (fill in the blank)”

So when He says “I will be with you”, He also says “I have been with you” because He is a God who says what he means and means what He says.

I find it fascinating that so many of God’s names are to differentiate Him from false gods. Even more fascinating I that when God revealed Himself to people using these differentiating names, they understood. They didn’t have to do an in-depth study. They knew

  17. Chrsitina says:

I have often focused on the fact that God keeps his promises, but have not really considered the magnitude/impossibility/zaniness of what He has promised and what the promise shows me about God. I was struck by Exodus 6:2-5, “God spoke to Moses and said to him, “I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them.” This took me back to “the Lord” day and helped me consider how Moses was about to know God as the Lord because of what was promised to Moses. I guess I mean to say that while I’m thankful that God fulfills His promises, I’m as struck by what the promises say about God, too. Especially how it relates to the improbability/impossibility of the promise of our fellowship with God in 2 Corinthians 6:14-18, that He promised and fulfilled. This study has helped take names that I’ve used when talking to/about God and have given them meaning/weight. So grateful for this study and for everyone’s sharing.

So I’m jumping in this bible study a little late, but I feel like I just really need the fellowship of Christian women that’s offered here, I love reading She Reads Truth studies, but I don’t usually comment. As I flip through the comments I can’t think of anything that hasn’t already been said. There are so many of us who believe in God’s mighty power, and proclaim it is strong enough to overcome anything. I feel like when I am offered a difficult situation, sometimes God’s power to help us overcome is lost from my mind. I try to do/control every situation on my own. This is something I need to let go of, and stand blameless in God, following and trusting in his plan for my life. Another thing that’s been on my mind is that some situations just need to be handed over to God. Even if you’ve already begun down a bad road like Sarah did by handing over her maid to be Abraham’s wife, God can still turn it around. He did then, and he will now.

He’s able! God is bigger and stronger than my circumstances. I don’t have to be sad or scared because God is so much more powerful than what I’m facing. He is able to do the impossible and He always keeps His promises. I’m so thankful for a God who is faithful, loving, and Almighty.

    1. Tina says:

      So true Chloe..

      Amen.

  23. Stephanie Pavlik says:

‘There isn’t anything He can not do!’
I can rest in that to receive the peace I need regardless of how things look in the world, and in my personal life sometimes. He is God Almighty Who has left us His word and promises we can stand on and doubt not that He will do them❣️I thank Him for loving us so much.

  24. Dorothy says:

God can do whatever I ask Him to do but that doesn’t mean He will even the impossible – what I think is impossible.

  25. Georgie RaeBass says:

Out God is so big and so great…almighty enough to keep improbable promises. Almighty to do things in our lives that we and the test of the world have deemed impossible, or even not worth it. He is so great and so good.

  26. Audren says:

With this name, He is calling Himself “All mighty”. Showing that He is powerful enough to make a covenant with Abraham for every Christian, fulfilling the prophecy that we are His descendants. So the name “God Almighty” is associated with His unfailing promises. As it does show up in Job, in a sense to say that in our most desperate times, He has the power to comfort us with His unfailing promises! I can’t say this enough but it is so amazing that even the different names God uses for Himself have deep intentions in the Word. I’ve loved this devotion!

  27. Ma Leila P Veloso says:

    My God is powerful!

  30. Amanda Koshley says:

I think God’s power is lost to me in the day to day “busyness” I find myself in. He is the great nurture of nations, he holds fast to his covenants, he moves and listens to his people, and his power makes us blameless. What more could I ask for in my day? To rest in the power of our Almighty God!

  31. Becky says:

When I think of almighty, I think of mighty. Able to do great and measurable things!! I believe for Abraham, having descendants as numerous as the stars , God Almighty has and is doing great things!!

He makes promises and keeps every single one because He never kids around, never lies. He means what He says and says what He means. He is God. He delivers on every single promise because He has the power to do so. He is never inadequate or unable. He is all powerful all the time. He is indeed God almighty. A great God and He is mine!

He is God Almighty and He has called me to live in His presence. That is beyond mind-blowing to me. From the beginning that is what He has desired for every person who has ever lived or ever will live. He calls me to be blameless but it is His power that will enable me to do that. All I have to do is be still, wait on Him, live in His presence. I am having a hard time taking all of that in. There are no words…what an incredible, wonderful God we serve!
