In this Names of God reading plan, we are learning more about God by studying the names given to Him in Scripture. Rather than having our writers share their own reflections on these passages, we’ve instead provided research-rich content to aid in your study of each day’s featured name of God, including the background of the name(s), a brief explanation of the character of God emphasized by the name(s), and a reflection question to help you dig deeper into the text.

God Almighty
El Shadday (Hebrew)
Scripture Reading: Genesis 17:1-8, Exodus 6:2-5, 2 Corinthians 6:14-18, Revelation 11:16-19
Description
El Shadday, or “God Almighty,” is a name God uses to describe Himself throughout the Old Testament. He appears to Abraham in Genesis 17 with the greeting, “I am God Almighty.” Then God makes a covenant with Abraham, promising to make him the father of a great nation, even though Abraham was old and his wife was barren. God offered His name, God Almighty, as the guarantee of this improbable promise. Bound up in God’s covenant promise to Abraham is the Lord’s proclamation of His power.
The name God Almighty also appears frequently in the book of Job to emphasize God’s power over all things. El Shadday is a powerful, impressive name for our God.
Emphasis
God’s power over all things

I abide under His shadow. My King.
Thankful that God is all powerful and my situation wether trial or victory is not dependent on my power. For I am weak but his power makes me strong. All glory goes to him!
When God Almighty says “I will (fill in the blank)”, He also says “I have (fill in the blank)”
So when He says “I will be with you”, He also says “I have been with you” because He is a God who says what he means and means what He says.
❤️
Christina, I love ❤️ your post. I felt the same way. The meaning of God Almighty is truly a revelation for me. I am in awe.
Debra and Callie I agree with your posts. Praise God Almighty, Promise Keeper, Way Maker. Amen ❤️❤️❤️
He is all powerful, so when He makes promises to us, we know He will keep them.
God’s power transcends everything. No matter the circumstance, God has the power to do the impossible!
I find it fascinating that so many of God’s names are to differentiate Him from false gods. Even more fascinating I that when God revealed Himself to people using these differentiating names, they understood. They didn’t have to do an in-depth study. They knew
God Almighty has power over ALL things—life, death, fear, anxiety, everything good and everything bad. I will praise God Almighty, even in the storm!
There is nothing impossible for God almighty! All power is in His hands.
My God can do ANYTHING!!! There’s NOTHING my God cannot do!! For me, for you, for us!! He is the Great Almighty God of all the earth, and nothing gets past Him, and all He says He can do, He is fully capable of bringing to pass, however, whenever and at whatever time!!
God Almighty, El Shadday, has the final word!
God Almighty, El Shadday, has the final word! Amen!
This name is familiar to me…and I have always found it interesting. Now, I recognize the power of what it means when people have said the name. God is Almighty, there is nothing he cannot do or be or change. El Shadday.
Lord you are Almighty and I am all weakling. And when I remember that ……. I am strongest. With His strength.
I have often focused on the fact that God keeps his promises, but have not really considered the magnitude/impossibility/zaniness of what He has promised and what the promise shows me about God. I was struck by Exodus 6:2-5, “God spoke to Moses and said to him, “I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them.” This took me back to “the Lord” day and helped me consider how Moses was about to know God as the Lord because of what was promised to Moses. I guess I mean to say that while I’m thankful that God fulfills His promises, I’m as struck by what the promises say about God, too. Especially how it relates to the improbability/impossibility of the promise of our fellowship with God in 2 Corinthians 6:14-18, that He promised and fulfilled. This study has helped take names that I’ve used when talking to/about God and have given them meaning/weight. So grateful for this study and for everyone’s sharing.

A true comfort that I have a God Almighty
Grateful for His Power…God Almighty!
El Shadday…
God Almighty..
Thank you.

So I’m jumping in this bible study a little late, but I feel like I just really need the fellowship of Christian women that’s offered here, I love reading She Reads Truth studies, but I don’t usually comment. As I flip through the comments I can’t think of anything that hasn’t already been said. There are so many of us who believe in God’s mighty power, and proclaim it is strong enough to overcome anything. I feel like when I am offered a difficult situation, sometimes God’s power to help us overcome is lost from my mind. I try to do/control every situation on my own. This is something I need to let go of, and stand blameless in God, following and trusting in his plan for my life. Another thing that’s been on my mind is that some situations just need to be handed over to God. Even if you’ve already begun down a bad road like Sarah did by handing over her maid to be Abraham’s wife, God can still turn it around. He did then, and he will now.
Amen…

He’s able! God is bigger and stronger than my circumstances. I don’t have to be sad or scared because God is so much more powerful than what I’m facing. He is able to do the impossible and He always keeps His promises. I’m so thankful for a God who is faithful, loving, and Almighty.
So true Chloe..
Amen.
‘There isn’t anything He can not do!’
I can rest in that to receive the peace I need regardless of how things look in the world, and in my personal life sometimes. He is God Almighty Who has left us His word and promises we can stand on and doubt not that He will do them❣️I thank Him for loving us so much.
God can do whatever I ask Him to do but that doesn’t mean He will even the impossible – what I think is impossible.
Out God is so big and so great…almighty enough to keep improbable promises. Almighty to do things in our lives that we and the test of the world have deemed impossible, or even not worth it. He is so great and so good.
With this name, He is calling Himself “All mighty”. Showing that He is powerful enough to make a covenant with Abraham for every Christian, fulfilling the prophecy that we are His descendants. So the name “God Almighty” is associated with His unfailing promises. As it does show up in Job, in a sense to say that in our most desperate times, He has the power to comfort us with His unfailing promises! I can’t say this enough but it is so amazing that even the different names God uses for Himself have deep intentions in the Word. I’ve loved this devotion!
My God is powerful!
One of my favorite praise songs of all time is Amy Grant’s El Shaddai. Unfortunately, I’m not tech savvy enough to supply the YouTube link. What a great way to start the day.
I’m not tech myself LOL, I had to just play and listen to it alone
What a mighty God we serve, what a mighty God we serve. Angels bow before Him, Heaven and earth adore Him; what a mighty God we serve!
I love that song! I’ll be singing it while I’m at school today. Boy, do I need it! Thank you for the reminder of this beautiful song.
I think God’s power is lost to me in the day to day “busyness” I find myself in. He is the great nurture of nations, he holds fast to his covenants, he moves and listens to his people, and his power makes us blameless. What more could I ask for in my day? To rest in the power of our Almighty God!
When I think of almighty, I think of mighty. Able to do great and measurable things!! I believe for Abraham, having descendants as numerous as the stars , God Almighty has and is doing great things!!
“El Shaddai”
Our God is all powerful. He can do anything. He is different than gods of stone and wood. He the a covenant making and covenant keeping God. His promises can be counted on, He will not go back on His word.
HE is God all powerful! He can and will do anything for me! I am HIS child. He can get me through this as HE’s been doing all this time. He is El Shaddy! I remember the song by Amy Grant.

El Shaddai
Praise be to God! For nothing is impossible because he is the Almighty one! Full of power and strength for US.
El Shadday is such a beautiful name. I love that this name shows God has no bounds in time or resources.God of the past, presence, and future. He can promise generations of offspring to Abraham and He can heal and restore all things. He is so worthy of our praise. Sing out to El Shadday God Almighty!
Nothing is impossible for God! He is God Almighty! Praise Him!
Praise God for being the beginning, middle and end! He is all powerful and in control of every situation.
Please don’t make a promise you don’t mean and don’t make a promise which you know you can’t deliver. Praise that my God never does these two things. He is God Almighty. He makes promises and keeps every single one because He never kids around, never lies. He means what He says and says what He means. He is God. He delivers on every single promise because He has the power to do so. He is never inadequate or unable. He is all powerful all the time. He is indeed God almighty. A great God and He is mine!
YES HE IS
Amen!
Regardless of what I SEE He is in control of all things and He is FOR me and WITH me.
YES! HE is in control!!
I have felt this week. In the midst of struggling with big changes I prayed to God that he would make a path clear. In my impatience and weakness I thought he wasn’t answering me but in His time he revealed things that Indidnt think we’re possible. He is Lord over all.
Loved this❤️
There is none greater
God has power over all things, including the difficult situation I am faced with at home and at school.

Just emailed you! I work at a school as well and have recently had some major challenges come up with my student. I’m learning to see problems as challenges and learning opportunities to strengthen my faith muscle. What an amazing and powerful God we serve, I am so thankful that I can rest in His promises and His word. Verses like Jeremiah 29:11 comfort me during these times. Hallelujah, God is good!
What a timely devotional! It is so comforting that God is All Powerful when a situation in my life is completely out of my control.
Yes, it really is so comforting!
Asking Jesus to wrap His arms around you, and give you His precious Peace and Strength for your journey, especially today, Kelly…
God’s power over ALL things. Favorite line this morning.
He is God Almighty and He has called me to live in His presence. That is beyond mind-blowing to me. From the beginning that is what He has desired for every person who has ever lived or ever will live. He calls me to be blameless but it is His power that will enable me to do that. All I have to do is be still, wait on Him, live in His presence. I am having a hard time taking all of that in. There are no words…what an incredible, wonderful God we serve!
❤️
❤
As He is Almighty, He can establish any covenant He wishes. In His Kindness, He chose to make a Covenant with me, throughout His Own blood… what a precious Gift!
There is none greater than He.
He is the ‘all mighty’..Almighty. All powerful. Nothing is beyond His might or power. He can do the unthinkable, He can move mountains with just His breath. He can move in our situations beyond our imaginations because there’s nothing impossible for Him. What a great God He is.
Halleluyah!
Hallelujah!!!!
Amen!
Hallelujah!
