from the This Is the Old Testament reading plan

Deuteronomy 7:1-16, Hebrews 9:1-28, 2 Corinthians 1:20

BY She Reads Truth

This Is the Old Testament is part of a twelve-week thematic overview of the entire Bible. As we read, we’ll gain a broader understanding of the redemptive story of Scripture. Each day we’ll read a thematic selection from a different book of the Bible, along with supplemental passages that show how the theme of that day’s main reading is found throughout Scripture. We’ll also read a brief summary of each book and a reflection on how the book fits into the larger story of Scripture.

What Is Deuteronomy? The book of Deuteronomy, meaning “second law” or “repetition of the law,” contains commentary on the law given to Moses at Mount Sinai, which equipped the covenant community of Israel with instruction on how to live faithfully in their covenant with God. In Deuteronomy, Moses repeats the law to the new generation of Israelites preparing to enter into the promised land after forty years of wandering in the wilderness.

How Deuteronomy Fits Into the Story: Deuteronomy emphasizes the need for God’s law to be internalized into the hearts and minds of God’s people. After the books of Psalms and Isaiah, the New Testament alludes to Deuteronomy more than any other book in the Old Testament. Jesus and the apostles considered the book of Deuteronomy to be vital in their own teaching about God and His relationship with His chosen people and all of humanity. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He quoted Deuteronomy to rebuke Satan (Lk 4:1–13).

Reflection Questions:
1. How does your reading in Deuteronomy point to God’s faithfulness, holiness, and justice as motivation for obedience to the law?
2. How does today’s reading shape your understanding of the story of redemption?

Take time to reflect on your responses and share what you are learning with others in the community in the comments.

I am using this Grace Day to catch up Friday’s reading. And as I sit here on my front porch with coffee listening to the birds and feeling the peace and rest of the Sabbath, I read this verse: “and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins”. (Hebrews 9:22) Everything I am and have is because Christ she’d His blood for me,

Blessings to all of you reading and praying through these scriptures.

Hi Angela, I wanted to share a Psalm I learned when I was in 5th grade that I have repeated countless of times, that may help you. “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, O Lord. Take not your holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of your salvation, and renew and steadfast spirit within me.” Continue to pray and grow with God and your heart and motivations will change. This Psalm is somewhere in the 50’s

I looked at the notes in my Bible for 1Corinthians 19-20. It’s says that all of God’s promises of what the Messiah would be like are fulfilled in. Christ ( in Him it has always been “Yes”) Jesus was completely faithful in ministry, He never sinned. He faithfully died for us and He faithfully intercedes for us. It also said that because Jesus Christ was faithful, Paul wanted to be faithful. I never thought of those verses like that before. Of course, I knew Jesus fulfilled all the prophecies and was faithful and obedient even unto death, but I didn’t understand that these verses explain about the promises of the Messiah. May God help me to obey and serve Him. I want to see God as Holy and reverence Him. I want to see Him rightly. I want to love Him and be undone by what Jesus did. I want that love to lead me to say, speak, do and think In a way that pleases Him. I can want to do my thing. I can be selfish and also have been tormented by thoughts. I need God’s help to know the way to go and what to say and do. Please lead me and change me, God.. Again, please let my love for You lead me to obedience.Amen I hope this makes sense.

For the past 5 weeks or so I have been doing one of my last and most challenging quarters in college. I quite literally slept, worked, ate when I could, and all other time was devoted to school. This is one of the last days in the quarter and one of the first in a long time that I have been able to devote alone time with Jesus again. Not only have I neglected my body and soul but I realize, I’ve forgotten much of God’s character. I was reminded while catching up on this week today that God has not gotten any farther away from me in any sense. He has still been working in my life just as much as the days when I am on top of the mountain and can’t get enough. Although this last quarter has not been at all ideal, I’m grateful and excited that I get to fall in love with God’s character all over again!
