I’m certainly no expert, but what I’ve been taught over the years is that in the reading about the talents it’s sort of a God thing that the word for money here is “talent”. It helps us understand that the gift that was given was intended to be used to produce something. The gift was not to consume the money (or a talent we’ve been given) but to use it for productivity for the rich man/owner of the talents. So those men who worked with what they were given to return it with interest to the rich man -they hit the right idea and his praise. The last guy disappointed the rich man (God) because he didn’t see that his gift was for using and bringing glory or increase to Him That’s how I’ve learned to understand this reading. That God gives gifts for the use and increase of his kingdom. If we don’t use it for Him, we will lose it or at least the eternal reward that could be ours. I’ll appreciate if others add to this or correct it.

I’ve always thought that the master was very harsh with the guy with the one talent. the guy at least protected it and put it somewhere where no one else could get it.

  3. Kady says:

Could someone explain why the servant who buried his talent was punished? I’m confused. Why didn’t he give the servants equal amounts in the first place and what was so bad about burying the money?

I tried to read through this all last year and got stuck on Leviticus and Numbers with all the details…now I’m appreciating God’s attention to detail and how He provided a way, complex as it may be, for his people to be forgiven. And that it was all part of the plan for them to realize that they can’t do what was required! Hence the need for Jesus.

    1. Aunna says:

I was thinking the same thing, Kari! It’s such a tedious read, because of the incredible detail. And all those tiny details, rituals, and sacrifices were paid for by the precious blood of our willing Savior.

    2. She Reads Truth says:

Praise the Lord for this! Thank you for sharing, Kari!

Is there a version y’all use to help make this an easier read???

  5. Jessica says:

I love that God was the One who instituted mold abatement haha! How cool that though His laws sometimes seem arbitrary, He is actually doing things that make sense now that we know that there is harmful and not harmful mold. =)

  6. Stephanie says:

    *our time, *our love

  7. Stephanie says:

Only today realizing what a major sacrifice to someone’s food supply an animal sacrifice would have been for God. And today he only asks us for his time, his love and devotion to him.

  8. Fiona Halt says:

I’m confused about the parable of the ten bridesmaids could someone help me out?

    1. Carley says:

I think the point is to be prepared for the second coming. We are the brides and Jesus is the groom. If we are prepared, like those who brought oil, he will take us with him. Those that had to go buy oil were not prepared for the bridegroom’s coming, so they were not allowed to be with him
