I definately had interesting thoughts about today’s reading. Timothy was hard for me to read. Being independent and being submissive is hard for me personally. I am really going to have to let today’s verses penetrate my thoughts.

All of these comments from the last 2 years -through today make for a spirited discussion! I LOVE how iron sharpens iron. The conversation helps us all grow! It may not be the intent of Timothy- but in light of the Jeremiah readings i feel convicted of expensive jewelry, manicures, spa treatments. Sometimes i see women wearing jewelry costing the same as a year’s water supply in an impoverished country. Jeremiah is hitting me hard thinking about my wealth as i ignore the needs of 99% of the world. I love Jesus. How am I serving him?

Timothy isn’t confusing but many women don’t like it. Just as the people of Jeremiah’s day we want to twist and find loopholes. I am an educated professional woman. Please do not perceive me as downtrodden. We are called to live modest, holy lives. Yes Phoebe was a deaconess. Women do minister in certain circumstances and especially to other women.

I agree. I was thinking of this as well. The OT mainly (I guess) is perceived to be aimed at men falling away & being disobedient to the Lord. We often excuse Timothy as a cultural issue back then. But clearly the Lord loves & uses women, but we also are called to surrender to the Lord and not our own ‘rights’.

There a few fascinating points with time in the following paragraphs but I do not know if I see these center to heart. You can find some validity but I will take hold opinion until I investigate it further. Very good post , thanks and then we want much more! Included in FeedBurner also

These letters are written by Paul to specific people for specific situations. Sarah Bessey writes extensively about how through Jesus women were ministering, prophesying, leading and teaching at the time of these letters – this was unheard of in a patriarchal society! In 1 Corinthians 14:39 Paul encourages women to prophesy. In the letter to the Galations Paul writes that we are “all one in Christ Jesus”. Most women were uneducated and many scholars believe that a particular group of women were being disruptive with questions and that Paul asked them to learn in quietness. He was encouraging women to learn and participate but perhaps wanted to shut down divisions. This itself is proof of Jesus’ and therefore God’s love for women, they were being included and educated for the first time!
I love Sarah’s commentary on this, and would encourage you to look at this. Jesus promoted equality, between all regardless of gender, race, physical appearance, disability or not – we are all loved! it is my belief that when kingdom comes gender will be insignificant. What will matter is your love for Jesus.

The reason Paul gives for why a woman should not teach or have authority over man is not cultural or situational but because of the creation order… “13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve;”
