Hosea 6 (by the third day he will have made us brand new) – hmmm ringing some bells :)

This is a theological bombshell. God controls history. But we have free will. But God hardens some hearts for his glory. But He is good all the time. It explodes my brain to think about it. I keep coming to a humble point of ‘I don’t know, but I fear God. ‘

7 What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened, 8 as it is written,
“God gave them a spirit of stupor,
eyes that would not see
and ears that would not hear,
down to this very day.”I’m struggling with a lot of what I read today. It just befuddles me than God, who so loves us, would intentionally harden the hearts of a whole bunch of people. Is someone able to explain this to me?

V20 “Quite right, they were broken off for their UNBELIEF, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear…” We come to faith by believing in Jesus Christ. There is no sin that will keep us from Him except the sin of unbelief in the Son of God, Jesus, the Savior of the world. God will continue to harden what we have already hardened, our heart. His desire is that all will believe in His Son, (2 Peter 3:19) but pride and a desire to be our own god keeps many apart from faith.

God hardened the hearts of many of the Jews so that He could reach the rest of the world. But the Jewish people are still His covenant people and He will endeavour to save them at the end of days.

Romans 11:22 Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.
Loving like God is the key to living life!

When I read those verses I’m just reminded that yes, God is a kind and loving God. But he is also just. He is also stern and will cut us off if we persist in unbelief!

22 Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.
What do you think Paul meant by this? I’ve always been taught you are saved once and then cannot do anything to “unsave” yourself.

This verse disturbed me too. I think I’ll do some research.

So I did some digging into the Matthew Henry Commentary, and I believe in this verse the Jews that are “cut off” are the Jews who have rejected Christ and believe they are saved by following the traditional Jewish laws and customs.
Matthew Henry says, “Tradition, time-honored customs, and the faithfulness of their ancestors would not protect them. It was futile to plead-though they insisted very much on it-that they were Abraham’s descendants.”

12 Now if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean!
Gentiles came to know the Lord, despite the circumstances with the Israel! Imagine how great it will be when Israel wakes up and join the Gentiles!!! It will be beautiful and joyful as we all come together in Christ!!-

Hosea 6:14 They do not cry out to me from their hearts
but wail on their beds.
This verse spoke to me about the importance of relying on God all of the time with our prayers..not just when things are hard. Even when things are good there is so much to cry out to God for. I pray that I can keep my desire to come to Him strong all of the time–not driven by what’s going on in my life but by my desire to have God present always. -
Hosea 6:4-6 really hit home to me. I often feel that I, too, and like morning dew. Quick to leave. By that I mean that I am quick to rejoice when there is good but I fail to rejoice and show my love to the Lord throughout. At times, when I don’t feel that I am as close to my God, I forget that it is I that needs to ask for forgiveness then He will have me back.

Thanks for sharing that..I totally get what you are saying. Even with our time in the Word in the morning..how well do we carry those thoughts throughout the day? It’s a constant challenge, I think.
