How Ive come to understand it through some research, as I didn’t get it at first either, the whole point of the profit asking to be struck, shows how important it is to yield to God’s Word, even if it isn’t necessarily what we think is the right or appropriate thing to do in a situation. And it parallels to Ahab in this, that if God would send a lion to devour a prophet who refused to strike a fellow prophet for the Lord, how would He deal with Ahab, who refused to kill a wicked King. Hope that helps some? Id encourage you to look up some commentaries!

  2. Slwe says:

I’m so confused about the prophet talking to Ahab? Can anyone give me some insight? Did he trick him? Why would he ask to be struck?

  3. I pondered this verse for a while— 18 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

First, I looked up what “asceticism” is: severe self-discipline and avoiding all forms of indulgence, typically for religious reasons.

Second, I pondered why the h in “Head” is capitalized. I had never seen the word “Head” used for Jesus before! (I have been stuck to reading NKJV and here it is not a option on this app.)

Third, it is saying NOT to have asceticism– but from commentary made previously, it is important to trust and rely on God first, then the rest of our lives will follow suit, eliminating the need for severe self discipline.

Our human world has no parallel for that He will provide for us and does provide for us!

has anyone been reading The Message? I started out reading ESV for this study, but the last week I’ve tried out the paraphrase and it’s so eye-opening (and sometimes a little funny)! I’ll probably be bouncing back and forth between the two for the second half of this study.

    1. Amanda says:

I have been reading the message for the Old Testament parts and it’s really helped me to understand !

    2. Amanda says:

It also helps with Jesus’s parables

    3. Leigh Ann says:

Where did you find the paraphrase? I’m lost with some of the OT stuff.

Today’s reading completely captivated me. From the moment God spoke to Elijah in a whisper to Paul’s repeated reminders that Christ is all. He is in all, He is all, with Him we are complete. I love it..this is one of those days I will go back and reread the words to let them sink in more.
Also, I love that some of us are connected on Instagram! I saw some Bible journaling from yesterday’s reading that was just beautiful. I’m @seattlespinner if anyone wants to connect. I love sharing the Word together!

Yes! I love the picture of God manifesting himself to Elijah in a whisper! Such a good reminder that strength and power are not always found in dramatic or sensational- but at time in gentleness and calm (notes from my study bible!). We sometimes get caught up in the peaks and valleys of life, when sometimes it’s in the middle that God meets us! :)

Just followed you! I post very little in the comments here, but I’m keeping up pretty well! @zzwhitejd

Colossians 2:23 – “These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, BUT THEY ARE OF NO VALUE IN STOPPING THE INDULGENCE OF THE FLESH.”

That really stuck out to me. None of these little regulations we could put on ourselves are gonna outright fix the problems we face. Eating healthier, or working out isn’t going to fix how I feel completely every day; and I shouldn’t be telling everyone that they have to start doing that to feel good. That’s a worldly thing, and the focus is still on me doing something to change or control my life.

The root of our problems is sin, and the solution is and has always been Christ. We take our days and everything in them to God, and we pray, and we read through scripture, and we try our best to obey. Then the posture of our heart becomes bent towards Him, and He deals with the real issue–our sin.

If you struggle with something, like not having self-control, as I do, then God can build up His Spirit in us to produce that fruit. Through that, I can still strive to eat healthier and work out, but the focus is on growing closer to God and developing the Holy Spirit’s fruit, not on making myself feel better.

    1. Leah Swindon says:

So well put, Emily! I think it takes so much growth and awareness to take the process of looking after our bodies as respecting the fact that Christ dwells in us..not so that we can fit into a size or an outfit. Health is vitally important, so that we can carry out the works He prepared in advance for us to do.

    2. Justine Fern says:

good word Emily! I’ve been so overwhelmed by all information that calls for our attention in this world: eat healthier, work out, have a tidy home, have a Pinterest looking living room, only feed your baby ‘this or that’, not too much TV time, watch the news (but not too much and not too liberal!), wear these clothes – all these things can be good in their own right, but it takes my main focus off Christ. praying today that we can all find a balance in staying tuned to Christ while also living healthy spiritual, mental, and physical lives!

    3. Debbie says:

Thanks for sharing, Emily, it’s all about Christ. I want to be a good steward of all the God has blessed me with but DO NOT want to for the wrong reasons – only to be conformed to His image. Its all about Jesus. Praise His name!!!

    4. Shirl says:

Thanks for sharing this. I didn’t understand this passage until you explained it. Thank you

    5. Gabrielle says:

      Thank you for your insight!

    6. Nicole Baum says:

      Thank you for sharing!

  8. Alexis says:

Colossians 2:10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. How beautiful is that! All I ever have to remember when life gets me down is that with Him I am at my fullest. All praise and honor to Him!
