Passively living what we might think is a “good” life is not going to please the Lord. We must actively (every day, every minute) determine in our hearts to seek the Lord. -

^such a good reminder that our hearts intent is what truly matters. I find that it’s easy for me to focus on trivial things that have no value in the eye of God and easy for me to get caught up in how Others may perceive me, (especially when I don’t make it a priority to spend time with God everyday) when in reality God doesn’t care about those things. wordly success means nothing if I haven’t opened my heart to God and I’m not walking faithfully with him, so I pray for the guidance and wisdom to value honesty, compassion, kindness, forgiveness, humility over appearance. As we’ve seen time and time again in the bible, if we have faith in God and walk through life with him at our side we will be blessed and find true happiness and success, regardless of our circumstances-
i agree we seem to take Gods gifts for granted leaving behind our souls and gaining the world for nothing.

We know that God is our Saviour. We know that He is perfect, that He is flawless, and that He died for US. Us who are not perfect, who are not flawless. He loves us unconditionally and tells us that if we follow His word and walk faithfully by Him that we will get to live eternally in His perfect kingdom. The word perfect comes up a lot here, but we can’t even fathom the true meaning of that word. In every day life we use the word “perfect” pretty often. We see a nice car, or pretty outfit, or even a handsome girl or boy and think to ourselves, “Oh my, how perfect!” But honestly, those things are no where near perfect. We could never imagine the true meaning of the word…think about all the things you catch yourself calling perfect throughout the day and the way those things make you feel…think about how something, SOMEONE, who is truly perfect could make you feel if you chose to set your mind and heart on Him! That is a feeling that I could never ever dream of feeling; however, God is that true definition of perfect and WILL make us feel that unthinkable way if we only choose to prepare our hearts to seek Him and to follow Him! This scripture is such a blessing for me to read. It is a daily reminder that if something or someone is not furthering your journey to seek The Lord, it is evil and by investing your time into those things or people, you are doing evil. Remember to always surround yourself with things and people who help you in strengthening your faith in God and also remember to be the kind of person who helps others in strengthening their faith in God!

It’s just sad that Rehoboam couldn’t figure out whose counsel to take when. He ignored the wise men when it almost meant war, and that decision split the nation for centuries. but then he followed the words of the prophets and didn’t go to war, and just when things were going well, he completely abandoned God.
I have to be on my guard not to wander away when things are good, too. -
Why did he marry his cousin…and have so many other children with another wife?Was that normal back then…and was it just priority to procreate and multiply? I’m trying to grasp this a bit more clearly.

His wives are only half cousins (or less) since most men had multiple wives, and the whole thing about marrying within your tribe made it difficult not to end up marrying relatives of some degree. And the multiple wives thing was a man-made custom, God never indicated that Adam should have more than one wife. And I agree, it was possibly a way to multiply faster lol.

I’m not sure why, but marrying within your tribe was a thing back then. Maybe someone else can share some light on the reasons why.

I don’t know specifically in connection to Israel but royal families used to marry relatives to keep their bloodlines “pure” which actually led to a lot of medical afflictions in royal families

I think this will help… Numbers 36:7 “No inheritance in Israel is to pass from one tribe to another, for every Israelite shall keep the tribal inheritance of their ancestors.” Because the land was divided among the tribes based on size, they were to marry within their tribe therefore not losing their allotment. They had the year of Jubilee to get back their land also, in case they had to sell it because of debt.

Also they were supposed to only marry another Israelite in order to keep pagan religions out of their homes. They continually failed at this!
Verses regarding the topic of marriages:
Genesis 28:1 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. Then he commanded him:”Do
not marry a Canaanite woman.”
They were living near/among the Canaanites and had Canaanite slaves but since the Canaanites were pagan they were not to marry them. That is why Isaac sent Jacob to Paddan Aram ( Genesis 29:6) to marry from his mothers family.Numbers 36:3 Now suppose they marry men from other Israelite tribes; then their inheritance will be taken from our ancestral inheritance and added to that of the tribe they marry into. So part of the inheritance allotted to us will be taken.
This was in reference to the division of land in the Promised Land before the tribes crossed the Jordan. One man had died and left only daughters. God directed Moses to given the daughters the father’s ( Zelophehad) share of the land. But, as we see, the men of Zelophehad’a tribe were concerned that the tribe would loose land based on the men the women took as husbands. So God told Moses to direct the women to marry only men within their tribe in order to keep the land in the tribal inheritance.( Numbers 36:6, 36:8) (
Deuteronomy 25:5-7 speakers about a widow without a son and marrying her husband’s brother. This too was a way to keep a name alive within the same tribe.
Ezra 10:2 Then Shekaniah ,son of Jehiel, one of the descendants of Elam, said to Ezra, “We have been unfaithful to Our God by marrying foreign women from people’s around us. But in spite of this, there is still time for Israel.
This is in reference to marrying pagans and God’s anger concerning this. (Ezra. 9:1-2 )All of Ezra 9-10.
Nehemiah 13:23-27 Speaks of men marrying pagan women and reminds them what it cost Solomon. So again it is in reference to pagan women.

Luke 11:37-54 is such a good reminder that appearances don’t matter, God looks at our heart. Feeling compelled to re look at my priorities and do a heart check before anything else today!

I agree Katie. I need a heart check. Am I laying burdens on people, especially those closest to me that I myself am not willing to carry? Am I neglecting justice and mercy and worrying about rule following? I do not want to be like a Pharisee!! Heart checks are necessary. I’m glad for the reminder.
