No idol shall come before the Lord! I love the representation of that as the Dagon literally fell before the Lord!

I think it is so cool that the Philistines’ god Dagon was found bowed down before the ark multiple times. It really shows that He is Almighty and above ALL things.

I Sam 6:20 “Who is able to stand before the Lord, this holy God?”

Last night at choir rehearsal, our director read us a devotion from John Piper that was about God being Almighty, what Almighty means, and how Almighty and Omnipotent are basically the same thing. I feel like the passages from 1 Samuel today go along with that as we see God’s power as well as His holiness.

God’s thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are not our ways (Isa 55:8) … He works everything for the good of those who love Him and have been called according to His purpose (Rom 8:28). Such a great reminder of the thread of grace that runs throughout time. Even through the ugliest of times, God’s glory can shine. When our God moves… People take notice. I’m sure it seemed like all hope was lost when the ark was taken. However, God was not shaken. He allowed it to show His might. People that mocked Him began to fear Him. It’s a glimpse of the coming kingdom when every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord! (Rom 14:11) God is so good :)

Interesting that the Philistines referred to the Egyptian plagues – if God hadn’t hardened the Egyptians’ hearts, how could that have affected the Philistines when they had hold of the ark of the Lord??
-
Good point!! I have always bristled a little tiny bit at Him hardening their hearts – it felt like they didn’t have a choice. But that’s untrue and God used it for so long to speak to us. Heck, He still uses that every day to affect those reading about the Egyptians! Everything He does has purpose. I’m really encouraged.

1 Corinthians 16: 13 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. 14 Do everything in love.
Some days we need just this very small words of encouragement.-
Amen.

“Who can stand in the presence of this holy God? “In an effort to have a close “friend” relationship with God, I feel that many of us have forgotten his power and holiness. These stories are so good for us to see that we can come to him as our dearest friend but we need to remember our state of weakness and sinfulness before Him and fear him as well.

Yes! Reading the Old Testament serves as such a great (sometimes hard) reminder of the character and nature of our God. He is all together holy– something that is impossible for me to fully comprehend.
-
So well said..I’ve been struck with this thought quite often during this journey.
-
Thank you for pointing that out. We all need to be reminded that we serve a HOLY God.
