Day 1

Women In The Old Testament

Isaiah 54:4-10, Jeremiah 31:31-34, Hosea 2:14-23, Hebrews 4:12

BY Amanda Bible Williams

Welcome to Day 1 of Women in the Old Testament! We could not be more excited to dig into this long list of names with you and watch as God reveals Himself in their stories.

Over the next 5 weeks, we will meet 27 women, their personalities as diverse as their circumstances. Together we’ll encounter courageous heroines and conniving heretics, loyal daughters and deceitful wives, their stories ranging from inspiring and heartwarming to downright disturbing. On the surface we may find ourselves asking, What does this have to do with me?

At that moment, rather than look at ourselves through the lens of these stories, let’s look to our God! Just like you and me, the women we’ll read about in the Old Testament are each part of the Gospel Story, the Story that always and only points back to Jesus. It is the story of God’s faithful pursuit of His people, the story of His steadfast love, and the story of redemption through His Son. Rather than try to be like or unlike the women we read about, we desire only to be more like Christ.

Our aim in reading about the women in the Word is to become women in the Word. This doesn’t mean inserting ourselves into their stories or contriving a moral lesson from their good and bad examples, but rather to read their stories with the sole purpose of learning more about God. This is His story, and we can find Him on every page.

There will be stories we don’t like or understand, stories where we’d prefer to look away rather than read on. But this is the Word of God! Hebrews 4:12 tells us it is “living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow.” It is for our good and His glory. So, together, we will not shy away from God’s Word, even when it is hard to hear. Let’s open the Bible not for a daily inspiration or pep talk, but only to pursue Him.

Jesus gave us His Spirit as a true companion and sure guide. Let’s invite the Holy Spirit to reveal Himself to us as we read Truth together.

May we find Him together today. May we be Women in the Word.

I love how the devotional tells us to look at God and all His pursuits and not just at the women. Excited to start this with my SRT bible

  7. Already have a page full of who He is and who He says I am from this first “digging into the word”
Amazing how scripture speaks life and fulfills abundance.

I am about to leave your home, like for real this time, and I’m moving across the country. Starting this series gives me hope that I will have a daily connection not just with these women but with the God who used them. I hope they will serve as an insight into the unlimited ways God can use me too.
