Lent 2018: See the Lord's Salvation: Day 7

Weekly Truth

Today's Text: Exodus 3:14

Scripture is God-breathed and true. When we memorize it, we carry the gospel with us wherever we go.

In this week’s verse, God reveals the greatness of His power through the authority of His name.

God replied to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.”
—Exodus 3:14

Could you share with me the technique that was used for this art? It is beautiful

  • Robin NHendrich

Praise to our God who is who He is and we are not! Praise to Him, who uses imperfect humans in His glorious story everyday!

  • Brittany Couch

Lord, teach me more about this I AM, Who I AM. Allow me to grow deeper in knowledge and love for you.

  • He is because He is. We are because He is.
    “I AM WHO I AM.”

  • KC Derond

Reminds me of the Hillsong United song I have on repeat right now: “What a Beautiful Name”
    It’s a really powerful song.

What a powerful God we serve ❤️

I’ve read this story a million times and heard it so many growing up but something really stuck with me this time then I never caught before and that was in Exodus 4:10-11

“But Moses replied to the Lord, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent- either in the past or recently or since you have been speaking to your servant- because my mouth and my tongue are sluggish.” The Lord said to him, “Who Placed a mouth in humans? Who makes a person mute or deaf, seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go! I will help you speak and I will teach you what to say.”

Wow this just really took my breathe away. I was confronted with the fact that I let this exact thing hold me back from what I know God wants me to do. I reason my way out of it sayin “No way I’m suppose to do that. I’m not good enough for that.” God has shown through his word countless time that I uses people who may not seem ready or the perfect person for the job but he will use you and give to the tools you need. This shook me to my core and was and incredible reminder to ask God for this blessing that he has promised us.

  • Amen!

I am in awe of how the Lord sets Himself apart from other gods. Moses was likely familiar with the selfish, petty, evil gods of Egypt. They all had names. They were all just as sinful as the people who served them. But our God can’t be contained in a simple word, in just one name. He doesn’t let Moses put Him on the same level as the Egyptian gods. He is other, holy, separate— He is God and not man. “I am who I am.” So simple and so mind-blowing. May we never lose our wonder.

    I Am Who I Am-
We should all aim to find our confidence in God and through God.

  • Caroline Odom

This verse and reminder of God’s vastness amazes me every time. Because He is our mighty creator, the reason and drive behind everything, He doesn’t need to provide any more of an explanation than, “I am,” because it somehow perfectly captures who He is.

In a world that seems like change is the only constant what an amazing verse to lean on. Without seeing the whole plan, my mind and heart are put to rest knowing that God is today as he was yesterday and forever. So encouraged by seeing so many women stand firm in His truth! ❤️

  • Sister friends, would you please pray for me? I have a big job interview coming up for my first teaching job, in a large district that is very difficult to get into, and that I would LOVE to be in! I have so many worries and fears that my mind can only think of the what-ifs. I don’t feel well prepared and I am losing sight of Who called me to this field and Who knows what’s best! Please pray for peace and wisdom during my interview.

For me, this is an answer when I doubt Him – or question His timing. I’m adopting a little boy, and it’s going slower than I want it to, and I don’t understand. But when I go to God and question Him, I hear Him say, “I am who I am” and I know He’s in control. I know He knows the timing and He knows what He’s doing. He is who He is.

    • Hannah Collier

Thanks for sharing this! I recently went through something that I know a God brought into my life and I was confident that He was going to make a certain outcome from it but apparently God has a different plan than I do because it completely fell apart. I was crushed and didn’t understand, but I know that He brought this to me and like you said He is in control! He is God, and He knows what He’s doing even when I have absolutely no idea what’s going on! I just have to trust Him. Thanks for the reminder! I hope you’re able to adopt your little boy soon, I’ll be praying for you!

Can someone give me the depth behind God’s “I Am” statement? I have always wondered about this but never really understood and I just want to be able to go deeper with it!

    • Celine

The way I interpret the I AM statements, which are probably one of my favorite reoccurring statements in the Bible is that God is pointing out and telling us HE IS the only way. We see it in John when he says I AM the bread of life, I AM the light of the world, I AM the door of the sheep, I AM the resurrection and life, and a well known verse, I AM the way, the truth, and the life, I AM the true vine. God is saying His is the only way, the only truth, the only way of life, He is the true vine from which we grow from. One thing I was told is you can replace all the I AM statement with HE IS and read them that way and it makes more sense of what He is saying and trying to get across. Hope this helped. c:

I AM THAT I AM… God is simply saying to Moses I am whatever you need me to be in your life! I AM Jehovah Jireh (God your provider), I AM Jehovah Shalom (God of Peace- peace that passeth all understanding in the storm of life’s experiences that you may be facing), I AM Jehovah Tsidkenu(God of Righteousness) I AM Jehovah Nissi (God of War- against the raging power of darkness attempting to attack your soul/finances/ministry/life etc) I AM Emmanuel (God with us) …. list is endless- He is the Almighty the beginning and the End, Alpha and Omega, He says in psalms 91:16(I think)-Call unto me and I will answer you, I will deliver you and set you on high…..
I AM that I AM. Every Blessing Mollie(my two pence)

Look into the study by Lysa TerKeurst calling “Finding I Am”. SO good.

      • J'Lynne

“Finding I Am” is a great study! Kay Arthur’s “Lord, I Want to Know You” also goes through the names of God.

    • Jillian Waggoner

I’m no theologian so I can’t speak from the academic. But I’ve toyed with this same thought since I was a child. I have come to imagine it as a declaration to his creation that he exists. There is a sense of density and completeness in “I Am”. We, as humans, are always “becoming” or “changing into”, “being formed, perfected in love” etc. But God was, is, and always will be. Constant. Never changing. Alpha and omega. Beginning and End.

    • Morgan Lancaster

I agree with Jillian and also think it captures the depth in the statement itself. There is nothing we could put behind the words “I Am” that truly convey who God is.

    • Pamela Strommen

      “I AM”.
Does this have something to do with Him declaring the holiness of who He is? I know the Israelites, who were afraid of breaking the law of taking the Lord’s name in vain, did not call Him by name. Perhaps God was using His true name as a declaration of war? He is all that He says he is, and it’s time that his people live like they believe it.

  • Hey all, could you please pray for me? Sadly have had a fever yesterday and today, not feeling well at all. Just getting a little worried over the school I have to do but can’t yet since I don’t feel well…emailing my teachers about it so hopefully they will allow an extension.

  • Who Was, Who Is, and Is to come. Praise the LORD!

  • Sabrina Michelle

The beginning and the ending ❤️

  • tahoechild

It is so hard to see progress sometimes when it comes to changing hearts…but I still pray daily for that to happen to loved ones. Thank you Jesus for being the I AM.

  • Jo Gistand

    Praise Him!

  • Jessica McCreary

Just the reminder I needed!!! ❤️

  • Courtney Brown

Even before I knew the depth of what this verse meant, it’s always felt important and intimate to me.

  • Gabrielle Biliran

Starting to rely more on God to open someone’s heart so they can hear His word, and he’s slowly but surely doing it

  • Erin Vallez

I have watched God move so much of my life in the last year and a half. I have also learned that some of what His plan is takes time to be revealed. The waiting on the I AM is the hard part but nothing is worth having if God doesn’t provide. I know He is good and I know he will give me what I need as I need it…so today my prayer is for strength to those of us who are in the waiting, prayers to remember that God is the greatest, healer, redeemer, lover, provider, forgiver…we could ever need! Whatever this wait is for, I declare I will wait on Him! He is worth it!

  • used to carry a small poem that I had clipped years ago from Guidepost magazine. I’m paraphrasing it but it was a reminder to stop living in the past, He’s not I WAS; stop worrying about the future, He’s not I WILL BE; simply focus on this day, this moment because He is I AM.

While I’ve long misplaced the actual poem, I frequently stop and remember the message.

    • Susan

Paraphrase or not this is a beautiful reminder for me who has a hard time to let go of my past sins as they are forgiven and forgotten by a loving Father! I hope you don’t mind but I am going to write this down in my SRT Lent book to refer to when my human mind is prone to wander.

    • Churchmouse

I know what you are referring to.
I have it written in my Bible. I am away and do not have that Bible with me but I will be home in a week so I will post it next Sunday.

  • Caroline Smith

I have been praying to God for 2 years that he change someone’s heart … and I knew it was only possible through God and he’s doing it. It’s coming to pass. He’s amazing!

  • Robyn ShumateWentz

God had revealed to me through this one time that I Am Who I Am, stating too that he can be seen through so many people and so many things. A persons smile, a helping hand, a beautiful sky, someone’s love and on and on and on. ❤️ I AM WHO I AM
Thank you Jesus for being the same yesterday, today and forever!

  • Churchmouse

He is all He says He is. And that is more than enough.

  • Dana Melvard

The God who knows –> I AM!

  • With his name everything is possible..
