Advent 2016: Christ Was Born For This: Day 22

Fourth Sunday of Advent

by

Today's Text: Zechariah 9:9

Memorizing Scripture is one way to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ, our perfect King. This week, we will memorize this verse of celebration that our King has come:

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
—Zechariah 9:9

Write this verse down in a place where you’ll see it often, or save the image below as your phone’s lock screen so you can read these words of truth throughout the day. As you memorize this verse, give thanks to God for the gift of His Son, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. 4-advent4

  • the prophesy years before! Jesus is the word made flesh and when he comes again the words of prophesy in revelation say his name is “the WORD OF GOD.” Until then we remain God fearing woman, holding fast to the WORD OF LIFE. Thank you Jesus for you grace and mercy. we are yours. your servants.

Every single prophecy about Jesus given by the OT prophets was fulfilled in Jesus. From Moses in Genesis to Malachi…Jesus was God’s plan for us. The heel of a woman, to the cross Satan is defeated and we are given new life in Christ. Hallelujah what love is this!!

I looked up Matthew Henry’s commentary on this verse and I’d like to share it with y’all:

“He is meek, not taking state upon him, nor resenting injuries, but humbling himself from first to last, condescending to the mean, compassionate to the miserable; this was a bright and excellent character of him as a prophet (Mt. 11:29 , Learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart), and no less so as a king. It was a proof of this that, when he made his public entry into his own city (and it was the only passage of his life that had any thing in it magnificent in the eye of the world), he chose to ride, not upon a stately horse, or in a chariot, as great men used to ride, but upon a beast of service indeed, but a poor silly and contemptible one.”

The custom was that if a king was coming in peace he rode in on donkey (ass), but if he cam to conquer, he rode on a horse.

  • To me, this verse sums up some of the mindblowingly awesome ways our God works. The KING OF KINGS was sent to YOU (and to me). The fact that Zechariah used “you”, not “us” tells me God loves each of us on such a personal level. And then, to think that when the King comes down to us, he arrives on a donkey?!?? What?! You’d expect the King of Kings to come down on the most regal horse or in a golden carriage, wrapped in royal clothes , but our King surprises us all and enters on a donkey, a symbol of peace, instead of on a horse, a symbol of warriors. PRAISE THE LORD for shocking us all and continuing to show us how loved we are.

There are indeed dark nights of the soul. Never doubt that even in that bleakest and most forlorn time, “your King is coming” to you. He sees. He understands. He cares. He comes. He will walk you through. He will carry you. “Rejoice greatly… Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!” You are not invisible. You are His Beloved.

Thank you for this. I gave birth to our first child in July and he passed away 13 hours later. I have been dreading Christmas this year because Christmas morning was when we told our families we were expecting. I am thankful that my God sees us and I take comfort in knowing He understands how it feels to lose your only son.
