Worthy of Praise: Day 11

Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us

Today's Text: Psalm 23:1-6, Micah 7:7, John 10:7-18

Text: Psalm 23:1-6, Micah 7:7, John 10:7-18

“Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us” was first published in 1836, in a collection of songs titled Hymns for the Young, compiled by Dorothy Thrupp. While its composition is sometimes attributed to Thrupp, some publications do not credit her at all, citing the writer as anonymous.

Why Thrupp did not credit herself as the writer, we may never know. Regardless, the gospel truths echoed in this hymn belong to all of us, those who are childlike in both stature and faith (Bailey 184).

Today, this hymn remains a strong, timeless invitation and prayerful response to the imagery found in Psalm 23. While the psalmist affirms the Lord’s faithfulness and goodness, the hymn writer actively calls upon God out of personal need. When coupled together, the psalm and hymn serve as a call-and-response:

“The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack” (v. 1).
Savior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need Thy tender care.

“He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters” (v. 2).
In Thy pleasant pastures, feed us.

“He renews my life; He leads me along the right paths for His name’s sake” (v. 3).
For our use Thy folds prepare:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.

Our endless call to our Shepherd is that of lost, needy, hungry children, and His response is love. We are His lambs—tender, wandering, forgetful—and yet He leads us still. He is our sure comfort and restful pasture. May we continually recall God’s character and call out for His faithful response.

Thou hast loved us, love us still.

Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us
By Dorothy A. Thrupp

Savior, like a shepherd lead us,
Much we need Thy tender care;
In Thy pleasant pastures feed us,
For our use Thy folds prepare:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast bought us, Thine we are;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.

We are Thine, do Thou befriend us,
Be the guardian of our way;
Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us,
Seek us when we go astray:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Hear, O hear us when we pray;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Hear, O hear us when we pray.

Thou hast promised to receive us,
Poor and sinful though we be;
Thou hast mercy to relieve us,
Grace to cleanse, and pow’r to free:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Early let us turn to Thee;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Early let us turn to Thee.

Early let us seek Thy favor,
Early let us do Thy will;
Blessed Lord and only Savior,
With Thy love our bosoms fill:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast loved us, love us still;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast loved us, love us still.

  • “Early let us turn to Thee.” If only we all could take these words to heart when we were young – more time to love Him, more time to grow in Him, more time to glorify Him.

  • Thank you Lord Jesus for gathering all your sheep together. Thank you Lord for continuing to look for and call to all the lost lambs out there. Praying they would hear Your voice and come to You. In your precious name I pray, Amen.

  • Jesus Jesus, thank you Jesus!

    This is great!

  • This is so good. I have never heard of this hymn, that I can remember. It’s so beautiful. It would be great if someone made a recording of it updated for today.

    • Kiana

      Blessed Jesus by CXVi is a recording of the hymn, it keeps the words pretty much the same but the music is updated!

  • Samantha

    I am trying to turn to God first thing instead of social media

    • SuzD

      Amen Samantha. I am also and my days begin in such a better way. Sets the tone for the entire day.

    • Miranda

      You are not alone.And to think i justify it sometimes when His Word fills me up and has no comparison – none at all – to social media.

  • I am going through difficult days battling anxiety and this is a timely reminder to look to the Good Shepherd.

  • Wow Beautiful !

    I have always loved Psalm 23:5 “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”

    I just love that it says “in the presence of my enemies”, like no matter what I am going through, no matter what I may be feeling or who may be coming up against me, HE is preparing a table for me. Even in those moments of despair and pain, He is making preparations. This has always been so comforting to me!

    “He renews my life; He leads me along the right paths for His name’s sake”

    I love this verse right here. He renews my life, always! Thank you Lord for NEW life

  • “Thou hast promised to receive us, Poor and sinful though we be; Thou hast mercy to relieve us, Grace to cleanse, and pow’r to free…” Such a beautiful reminder of our salvation this morning… Through His Grace we are clean!

    I don’t know if this has been shared yet, but I really enjoyed Leigh Nash’s version of this hymn: https://youtu.be/SooFL-X7vnk

    • Elizabeth

      This is my favorite version of this hymn!

      • cris

        Found this version on YT also. Love it. Psalm 23 is so special to me in many ways – the first psalm I ever memorized as a child. I hold to the truth that He will never abandon me! What a precious promise that soothes the soul.

    • Veronica

      My favorite as well! Beautifully worded, and it truly hits home for me today.

  • The Scriptures and hymns have flooded my heart and mind with great peace and comfort this morning. Truly grateful! I love this study!

    • Rebecca

      Me too! His loving kindness fills my heart with joy…thank You Blessed Jesus ❤️

  • “I am the good shepherd. I know My own sheep, and they know Me…” How comforting and thankful I am that He can be known by us. What a precious thing to me!

  • These words give me so much comfort and peace. He keeps me and runs after me when I stray. He doesn’t wait on me to ask for Him to help me. I belong to Him and He keeps me close. Oh how I need this reassurance on a daily basis these days. To start my day hearing my Savior’s promises makes such a difference in my attitude. Thank you Jesus!! Thank you SRT!

    How timely this study of Scripture and these hymns! Coming on the heels of last evening’s presidential debate, how reassuring to read Psalm 23, Micah 7:7, John 10:7-18 and the lyrics of this hymn this morning. He is a good shepherd. He is the only door. I will look to the Lord. Yes. Yes. Yes.

    “Keep thy flock, from sin defend us // Seek us when we go astray.” God’s work in my life extends beyond providing peace and rest. He is a warrior, fighting on my behalf. He never rests, never stops drawing me back to him with His love and grace.

  • Christen Nohra

    Needed this! So often I work myself up and don’t find much earthly rest (especially being sick right now) but knowing that when I am still, I can lean on God for strength

  • I’m listening to some podcasts from Passion City Church, where Louie Giglio is the pastor. He is preaching a series through Psalm 23. How appropriate that this is today’s devotion. Lord, you know what I need to hear and have reiterated even before I. Praise His Name.
    One thing that sticks out for me is the second verse. “He makes me lie down…” How often do we need that rest in Jesus and we get so busy we don’t take it. But God. God knows. Maybe we get sick and can’t go to work and it’s just us by ourselves doing nothing. God knows. He knows we need the quiet. The time to rest in Him.
    I hope that makes sense. That’s my heart this morning ladies. God bless you all this morning. Have a wonderful day!
