Introducing: Mourning and Dancing

This plan is one we’ve been working on for a while, but somehow it still feels right on time. Introducing the next #SheReadsTruth community reading plan—Mourning and Dancing: a study on grief.

God created us as complex creatures, capable of feeling and sensing a whole garden of emotions. Made in the image of our Creator, we can both grieve the wrongs of this world, and celebrate the sweetness of this life. Even still, it can be difficult to live in the tension of joy and sorrow in our lives, both individually and as communities.
This two-week reading plan will lead us through a series of passages from Scripture that examine the seasons of mourning and dancing in the life of a believer. Our threefold prayer for this study is that you would:
Experience growth rooted in the truth of God’s Word through both sorrow and joy.
Examine sorrow and joy in light of Scripture and in the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Discover anew the privilege and practice of prayer.
The optional study book that accompanies this reading plan is special in it’s own right. In it, we’ll learn that the Bible not only invites us to lament, it also teaches us how. We’ll even practice lamenting daily, using a template modeled after a biblical psalm of lament.
And, of course, the book is beautiful! The images in the Mourning and Dancing study book were created using an early photographic process called cyanotype. These traditionally blue images, also known as shadowgraphs, are pictures produced with light-sensitive paper, but without a camera.

The rich shades of blue in mixed layers of exposure make cyanotypes feel like almost forgotten memories drifting in and out of focus. This art form also seems to elevate ordinary objects to quiet significance. Our hope is that these cyanotypes evoke a remembrance of dear relics of your past, and bring comfort and joy as you mourn and dance through the pages of this book. We pray God will use this book as a reminder to you of His goodness in days gone by and His promises for the days ahead.

We want to encourage you to walk through this study with a close friend, to not just give yourself or someone else another “to-do” but to actually walk through this impactful plan hand-in-hand with a fellow believer. Through 6/24, order a Mourning and Dancing study book for a friend and get yours 50% off. No code necessary—add two books to your cart and discount will be automatically added.

  • Joyce Griffin

This study has been a sweet encouragement to me after losing my big brother suddenly ten months ago. Also, a very close friend will be seeing Jesus soon at age 57. The emotions run high right now. This study has comforted and encouraged me. Thank you!

  • Hi, I downloaded the Mourning and Truth app. I’ve read Day 1 (I’m trying to play catch up) and is there a group I can join for people that may have come in at a later time or is there a group period that I can interact with? I want to learn the word, as of now I don’t know where to go.

    Thank you bunches,

  • Hey!
I got the study, I’m so so excited for it. I also got the app. The book mentioned plugging into community, a sharing type of thing? Just wondering where exactly that takes place? On the app? Or Somewhere on your website? Also, I can’t seem to access the study for free on the app- it wants me to purchase it, but I already have it… Not sure if that’s norm or not?
    Thanks for your help :)
    Glad to be here

  • Hi! I have the book and get daily emails with my monthly subscription. I am having a hard time with my app. I’m not sure if I follow only book and emails or can I access it on the app. I haven’t been able to find this study’s feed. Thank you and SRT has been such a blessing to me!

  • I lost my grandmother in April and a dear member of my church a few weeks ago. Grief is very heavy on my heart lately and I’m excited to begin this study that will hopefully help me deal with that grief. This will be my first study and I am praying that it helps me greatly.

  • If I purchased the study book will there be a code for the readings on the app with it or will I have to purchase access to the app readings also?

  • Kristin Abernathy

Would this be a good study for a friend mourning the loss of a child?

    • She Reads Truth

Hi Kristin! This study explores what Scripture tells us about grieving in a healthy way, and I pray it would be a helpful resource for your friends. We’re so glad you’re joining us.

  • God’s perfect timing! My hubby William went to Heaven on his 53rd birthday, 10/15/15 after years of illness. My sweet Mom joined him in March. I feel like I can’t breathe. I know God’s with me in this dark valley. This will be my first study with you. God Bless!!

    • Katie

Praying for you Cindy! Even in the heaviness of your comment I can still feel the depth of your trust in Jesus. You aren’t alone sister!

  • this will be my first study I heard about this app and plan through a friend. I just downloaded it today. I lost my husband 5 months ago he was 46 and I’m 41. he fought a long battle with AML a type if leukemia. I’m looking forward to this study.

  • A much needed study. God is just so good.

  • looking forward to this study… I have a feeling there will be many sad sharings. I’m reading 1 Peter in preparation

  • I justfound this and It sounds Very impactful. I wanted to order one for me and a friend. Can I still get50% off?!

  • Anna Vaschina

Will it be on the app?

  • Thank you for taking on this topic. Grief hits home for me. And while not a ‘fun’ emotion, it is real and many of us are suffering. Jesus knew all about it, contrary to many stereotypes of the happy/smiling-at-all-times Christian. We know great joy but also deep pain.

  • This plan could no have been more timely for me. 6 weeks ago we found out at a 30 week iltrasound that one of our twins girls had passed, we have named her Lillian Eve. I have been thinking and trying to see how I would be able to have both sorrow and joy on the day they would be born. Yesterday was their birthday, the day this was sent to my email. Our surviving twin is named Hannah Joy. The road my husband and I have to walk is now one mixed so intimately with sorrow and joy. Thank you.

    • Marcy

Chelsie, my heart aches for you. Tears in my eyes as I read your comment. I cannot imagine your sorrow. We may never meet but know that this momma is praying for you.

    • Beth B.

      Prayers for you chelsie! ❤️

    • Sarah

I just wrote this on Bernadette’s comment. But a book I recommend to go along side this study, and when going through grief, is through the eyes of a lion. Levi Lusko uses the unexpected death of his 5 year old daughter and walks through grief and it helps. I lost my best friend 2 years ago, and on the one year anniversary, this book came out. I’m praying for you! <3 <3

    • Jess

I’m so sorry for your loss Chelsie, and the grief that you may continue to feel so quite some time. I, too, have immense experience with this grief, having lost seven babies. I will pray for you.

  • Bernadette

I am looking forward to this plan. My mother past away in August last year and I thought I couldn’t go on. Then, in April, my only daughter past away. I have to be honest, she was only 30 years old. She was grown and lived 13hrs away from me, but I still can’t help but blame myself. I have so many questions, so many doubts. I know I have faith in God, but I wonder now, was my faith really real. Was it something in my life that caused my mother and daughter to be taken from me. I don’t want to hinder anyone’s walk with God, But I have a lot of questions. Maybe I should not ask questions here. It just seems like no one really understands me. Or maybe its me? Nothing seems to help. Maybe, this is what I need. Ok. I won’t be negative. I know God can help. He’s the only one that can. I just can’t feel it now. I know my purpose on this earth was not just to be a daughter to my mother and a mother to my daughter.

    • Tiffany

Of course this is the place! Please don’t be afraid to share your struggles. In your moments of feeling lost (I think we all have them at times), look to Jesus for comfort. Please don’t have doubts in your faith. I ask you to doubt your doubts. I know God has a great purpose for you and for all of us. Praying God will bring peace and comfort in your time of need and that you may find joy in life again!

    • njeri

God loves you. And he will see you through this. I am going to say a prayer for you right now!
      Hugs and Love of Christ.

    • Sarah

Another really good book to read along side this study is a book called through the eyes of a lion by Levi Lusko. He walks you through the grief process and shares how he now uses lenya (his 5 year old daughters death) as a microphone. <3 praying for you.

  • I’m so excited to start this plan. My ex-boyfriend died unexpectedly last month and the grieving process has been complicated. God truly knew that I needed this plan at this time

    • Sarah

I’m so sorry to hear of your loss Maria. I can’t imagine how that has affected you. I’m praying for you during this time. Much love.

  • When will the study be online to follow with the SRT?

    • Randi-Paige Hall
