This is the Gospel: Day 6

Grace Day

by

Today's Text: Psalm 51:1-12

We can all use a grace day, can’t we? Take this day as an opportunity to catch up, pray, and just rest in the presence of the Lord. Pray the scripture below for a specific woman in your life and for yourself.

“Be gracious to me, God,
according to Your faithful love;
according to Your abundant compassion,
blot out my rebellion.
Wash away my guilt
and cleanse me from my sin.

For I am conscious of my rebellion,
and my sin is always before me.
Against You—You alone—I have sinned
and done this evil in Your sight.
So You are right when You pass sentence;
You are blameless when You judge.
Indeed, I was guilty when I was born;
I was sinful when my mother conceived me.
Surely You desire integrity in the inner self,
and You teach me wisdom deep within.

Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones You have crushed rejoice.
Turn Your face away from my sins
and blot out all my guilt.

God, create a clean heart for me
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not banish me from Your presence
or take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore the joy of Your salvation to me,
and give me a willing spirit.”
- Psalm 51:1-12

  • God, let me always be aware of my sin so that I know what areas of my life I need to change and allow to be transformed by You.

  • Sarah Persia

What’s so awesome is that everyday with the Lord is a grace day. We don’t have to remind Him to show us grace, we only have to remind ourselves that it is available. I think one of the hardest things for women to do is show themselves grace- we think we are suppose to be super mom, sister, teacher, etc. It’s time we learn to rest in the Lord grace not that we become lazy but that we become fully equipped to be used in the most efficient way.

  • When we sin against others it is also against God

  • Christina

We are not saved so we can keep sinning. We are saved so we can have a relationship with our Heavenly Father. God hates sin. I am so thankful that is not the end of the story. While we are humans and are prone to sin, God loves us too much to keep us in sin. Those who come to him for restoration will be restored. Those who come to confess their sins and turn from their ways to Him will be welcomed back with arms wide open. What a loving God we serve!

  • Peace Ekakitie

This was great. It made me realize that no matter how hard I try to be righteous in my own eyes, it’s just not good enough… only God’s grace allows me enjoy all that I enjoy in him. Thank you Lord for your grace that is immeasurable ❤️❤️

  • “…Restore the joy of your salvation to me…”

Lord let this be the first thing I ask for when I wake up each morning. ❤️

  • I love how applicable David’s words are, still today! This prayer is so powerful; turning it into a plea on behalf of a friend who is wrestling with the faith was amazing. Thankful for grace day ❤️

  • Whitney

I pray this prayer for everyone I know ❤️

  • Just a reminder: include God in EVERYthing. Even what seems like the “small decisions” ask Him for advice, ask Him what He thinks is best, ask Him to join into your conversation, your thoughts, your prayers, your actions, your everything. You see, God have you His 100%, so we need to give Him our 100%. the least we can do is include Him in our every day life. He’ll become your best friend, your go to guy. Learn how to include Jesus in your every day decisions today.

    • Emilie

Thank you Maggie for reminding us all! It’s something I am working on, the more I do it the closer I am from God and there is so much Peace and rejoice to feel God and the Holly spirit inside of me ❤️

  • Kylah Gabbert

The freedom in this is so powerful! Allowing ourselves to live in grace is a breath of fresh air. God is good!

  • Michaella

Grace day is the opposite of the day I’m supposed to have. I’m definitely late for a college class I can’t miss right now and I have obligations & plans the rest of the day I can’t get out of. Gods timing is funny sometimes. I’m going to try to remember him even though my day is stressful and full.

  • This has been one of the hardest weeks of my life and God helped me through it. I am so unworthy but still he loves me❤️ Grace is amazing!

    • Careah Pruter

By any chance is this Ashton who goes to MNU?

    • Careah Pruter

And, it’s so wonderful to here that even through a rough week God reminded you of his beautiful Grace! Way to see it!

  • I’ve been stressed and worried through school. Great knowing Gos is leading me

  • Holly Clark

After a rough morning with my two year old, I need a grace day for sure! Thank you Lord for your perfect timing

  • BlessedandFavored

I am thankful for grace… AMEN

  • Praise God for his ultimate restoration and reconciliation!

  • Anastasia

God has the best timing! I really needed a grace day today, after everything that’s been going on I really needed to just sit down, catch up and realize how good God is!

  • “Abundant compassion”, that’s my God!!! Good word.

  • I see some others have recommended ‘White as Snow’ by Jon Foreman, which I also listened to while meditating on the psalm. Wash me white as snow, and I will be made whole.

  • Tori Tice

Thankful for His steadfast love and mercy today. I needed this!

  • Nicole Walker

This devotional today was so timely. There are some things I have been dealing with, and have for some reason had the mindset that I could not come before the Lord. I didn’t feel worthy enough to come to Him. We are worthy because He sees us as worthy because of His son Jesus Christ, and He is the only one who is able to cleanse us. Thank you so much for this devotional today!

  • I loved this!

  • Honestly, I needed some grace today. Here lately I’ve let worry and fear run my life and turn the image of Jesus into someone who just is waiting for me to step out of line, even though I know that’s not the case. I know He loves me and I’ll be thankful for that today

  • I know I’m guilty of a lot of sins and I am so ashamed of them. This is a really nice prayer and I needed it so much. God, please forgive me of my transgressions, cleanse me with hyssop, make my sins as white as snow. God, I want nothing more than to be in your favor, and with you for the rest of my existence.

  • Rebeckah

A very timely day for this for me. Very timely.

  • Mariah Luera

God knows that I felt guilty of my sin, and has sent this message, how great is our God! That just shows that He DOES pay attention to us and is constantly shaping our situations for the better!

  • Tarynn Busfield

This is exactly what I needed to hear today. I continue to be surprised by Gods oversight in my life :)

  • Kimberly Munoz

I’m in love with this, it just reminds me that no matter our sin, Christ desires a bride, he desires us. He throws our evil into the sea of sins and he never fishes to bring it back. He sees us. Only us. Not what we believe gives us value. He’s amazing!

  • Andi Draughn

Listen to ‘White as Snow’ by Jon Foreman as you read this. Consuming these words with two senses is overwhelming in the best way.

  • I really need grace today. Life feels like it is collapsing in on me. I read, earlier, about God and his love, how in his mercy we are re-broken so we can heal properly. Please, dear God, let it be so. Let me rejoice in this day and your new mercies.

  • Cristhal

    Grace day was much needed!

  • I love grace day! It’s such a wonderful feeling to rest in the Lord and all his love and promises :)

  • God has placed eternity in our hearts. Sometimes we have to go through the worst things to get to the good things in life. The things that have Jesus in it. “Psalm 51:8- “let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.” Praise God that he loves us so much to only want what’s best in out life. :)

  • Grace days! Not just a sabbath, not just a break, not just a day off. A Grace Day! Intentional sanctuary! I love this!

  • This is such an answer to my morning prayer today! Thank you Lord for this encouragement!

  • AmyLovesJesus

Speaks true to my heart. Always need to be humble at heart.

  • Diane Hill

A true reminder of my God’s unfailing love and forgiveness!

  • Stephanie

I’ve been weary and having a hard time praying, as if it was just a part of my to do list. This was an unexpected blessing. I started this particular plan on the “wrong day”, but God knew I needed it today. Thank you for writing!

  • “Restore me to the joy of Your salvation” is my prayer today.

  • Natalie Halter

Today at church, we read Ezekial 37. In this chapter, it talked about God bringing dry bones to life by breathing that life into them. And when a person sins, it is easy to become those dry bones.. To feel ashamed or unworthy, to push away God because of guilt, and to soon lose that meaningful part of life. But if you are feeling this way, do not be frightened or afraid. Don’t hide anymore. There’s a God who loves you that will breathe life into you. Just come to him, seek him with an open heart, and pursue him daily. So much love for all you ladies, my sisters in Christ. Stay hopeful!

  • Elizabeth

I really feel like God wanted me to hear this study at this time in my life. I am a teenager trying to live for God in an oppressive world. I often find myself going along with the crowd at school when doing the opposite would only mean momentary embarrassment. This is only one of the ways that I sin day by day, especially at school. But thinking about how I sin against an omnipotent, holy, just God to prevent myself from being embarrassed slightly is so challenging and I would appreciate prayer that God would help me stand up for Him around friends and look for opportunities to share the gospel rather than trying to avoid it. And so I pray this prayer today with all my heart and ask for forgiveness for being ashamed of God.

    • Cathy

I’ll be praying for God to give you a bold spirit! Boldness to represent Him instead of fearing rejection. Boldness to walk in His love by showing kindness to other students and praying with those who face challenges this school year. I haven’t been a teenager for a long time but adult life isn’t too different..there is still peer pressure within your career & social group, but if you stay true & honest with yourself about your actions, it isn’t so scary to follow your heart instead of the crowd. A lot of times, the group is waiting for someone to be bold enough to stand up when no one else will. God is always with you – let Him lead you to be bold!!

      • Elizabeth

Thank you so much, that means a lot to me.

        • Brooke Hartman

I understand how you’re feeling, Elizabeth! These worldly people and possessions make it feel real when in our hearts we know that GOD is the true real deal. I struggle with this in college, right along side of you. I don’t think that this will ever go away because temptation and satan is always lurking, however I do think that if we put our hope in Him and build a relationship with Jesus, he use us to further his kingdom. I’ll be praying for you, friend!

    • Mady Degner

I want you to know that you are not alone, so many times have I done the same. I find it so easy to glorify and reflect God in my youth group and at church. I have the same feeling as well, and I’ll be praying right along with you.

    • Brooke Hartman

  • I needed to hear this… So perfect! “God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

  • Surely the point of the Gospel is that Jesus already did this the moment we were saved!! This is an Old Testament prayer, under the old covenant… Jesus is our high priest, and brought us a better covenant.
God already sees us as having a clean heart and being righteous, because he sees us in Christ!
And for a New Testament Christian to pray ‘cast me not away and renew a right spirit’ undermines with Jesus has done, and what God has promised. If you are born again your spirit has been made ‘right’ and sealed by the Holy Spirit so it can never change. And God has promised He will never leave us or forsake us, so why ask Him not to cast us out of His presence? If He did He would be violating His own promise to us!!
    God bless you all xx

    • Janatertot

      The

    • Janatertot

I get what you are saying but the point of us saying that is the repent and be made right with God again so he can use us for whatever he needs us to do while I do understand that we were forgiven for our sins when we were saved we still have to repent for what we have done since then it’s like you said something to your best friend and you know she will forgive you no matter what but you’d still apologized to your best friend right?? It’s basically the same concept

  • My name is Grace, I never realized the blessing of my name. That I need grace and the vastness of Gods grace on me, but how much I truly need to be giving grace to others as well.

  • “… Let the bones that you have broken rejoice.” vs. 8b

Why is it so easy for us to praise Him when everything is good but so hard to when things aren’t going our way?
The world will notice when we continue to praise Him though we are suffering. We can have joy in the mist of storms because we know who commands the wind and waves.

THAT holiness is going to be a major way that the world sees Christ followers as set apart.
He may break us a times so that we can be closer to Him, to His heart, and to His will. But even then He is good. Even then He is working. Even then He is worthy of our everything.

We sometimes can get this picture in our head that what WE want and what WE think is best for ourselves is what God will give us, but most of the time the Lord has better plans… Better than anything we could ever imagine.

I loved this reminder that the Father will sometimes break us, take us to places of loneliness or loss, so that we can REJOICE with the broken “bones” He has blessed us with.

Sisters, I encourage you to REJOICE in whatever circumstances you’re going through. He is still worthy of our praise.

    • Kellie Jean

This is so true and something I’ve been learning lately. Thanks for sharing!

  • Ashley Dean

    Amazing and SO on time.

  • Love this. I needed this prayer more than anything. “God create a clean heart for me “

  • Psalm 51 is one of my favorites to pray

  • The placement of this devotion was perfect. I pray for each of you ladies!

  • Kay I know it’s difficult when we let people we care about down specially when their less then understanding. All you can do is apologize & try to do better next time. It’s okay to forgive yourself. It’s up to your friend now weather she will choose to live in anger fear & regret. I pray God will give you freedom & joyful friendships.

  • "God create a clean heart for me" … Sisters, I need your prayers right now. My friend cursed me for not greeting her on the day of her birthday, because I admit I forgot. I'm not good at birthdays, she was there for me when it was my special day, I think she expected too much. And it hurts to hear those words from a friend, it's very ugly, help me ask God to accept that I have fallen short in our friendship, and help me look at my friend with the loving eyes of God instead of hate from what she'd just told me. Pray with me.

    • Taylor

Prayed for you, Sister. I hope things work out for you

    • Morgan Doucet

Kay none of us are perfect except Jesus himself. We are all sinners and we can’t rely on other humans to satisfy us. God is the only one who will satisfy us! I’ll pray for you!

  • Always my favorite rendition of this Psalm in song:
    https://youtu.be/rv16YUTCp9U

  • Wow, this is a verse that I truly needed to hear, especially v12 when it says “restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold in me a willing spirit.” I need to pray this over myself

  • Kourtney

God provided this at the right time for me! I’m so thankful that I was shown this verse! I’m about to print it out and hang it in my room!

  • Ms. Davona

I’m glad I downloaded this amazing app…and it brings me closer to God… at the age of 29…I was just baptized and I am sooo rejoicing with the Love of God

  • Brittany

I’ve really needed God’s grace this week to not be so hard on myself. This is a beautiful prayer.

  • I am saving this verse and reading it every day. This is my prayer. Give to me Lord a willing spirit and restore a joyful heart.

  • Alisha Nicole Branch

Not only this Father but allow the grace to have this grace for one another

  • It’s as if David wrote this Ps on my behalf!! My prayer today and the next and the next

  • I'm so so so thankful that we can delight ourselves in God's grace. Such a simple and sweet truth. He is so good

  • This spoke to me so deeply.

  • Psalm 51:12 stuck out to me today. Asking for prayers as I always loose sight on vacations. Grant me a willing spirit, God, to start with you; stay with you and end with you each day. Give me your eyes for all the people around me here in this big city. That I may be open and willing to reach out in any way

  • I am so in need of his grace! I messed up big and I thought I wouldn’t have done that… But sin got the best of me. As I sat and cried I was reminded of the love and grace of Jesus! It’s truly amazing

    • Lauren Wayne

Me too Laura!!! I felt very guilty but God’s Grace has helped

  • It is such a blessing to rejoice in His grace. Right now I am sitting in a hotel room in Uganda, just hours ealier having laid hands with my team of missionaries on a sweet elderly lady who is very very sick. She is the mother of a wonderful, powerful woman of God. This woman’s name is Ruth, and she is struggling with the possibility of losing her wonderful mother. Please pray that Ruth would begin each day with a sustaining spirit right from The Lord!

    • Kay

Praying with you sister! Jesus will heal her! Her emotional, mental and physical illness, Jesus did it, and He will do it again, He will give Ruth peace of mind. As long as she trusts Him, she'll be at peace.

  • The one thing I love bout David is he knew where to go when things got hard. He also knew that God was the only one who could change him. “Create in me a clean heart O God and renew a right spirit within me.” So many times we rely on our own strength to change and then when we fall short we beat ourselves up. How can we fix what we didn’t create? If my car brakes down I take it to the dealer who made it. Only God, the creator of all things, can change this hard heart.

    • JennyBC

Ebony, so true. I have to fight myself constantly from working within my own strength. I like the way you look at this Psalm. Lord, keep me from working in my own strength. You indeed are the only One who can create a right spirit in me.

    • Laura

This spoke to me so much! Thank you

    • Christy

      Amen!

    • Kylee

      Beautiful perspective, thank you!

  • This is a Psalm I find myself always turning back to, and every time God speaks to me in a different way.

  • I'm going through lots of trials right now and this is just what I needed. Thank you.

  • Prayed this for my mom. We don’t have that close of a relationship and she is going through so many struggles. I pray that God would have mercy on her and bring her to Him however He sees fit. I also pray that He would have mercy on me in the same way.

  • Kimberly

“Be gracious to me,God, according to your Faithful love…wash away my guilt and cleanse me from my sin”

  • Danielle A

Beautiful Psalm to reflect on and pray. It’s been a trying week. Nothing like difficult situations to bring out my sins I am constantly fighting against. Praise the Lord for his grace, and ever ending help to overcome sin.

  • Nicole, I was singing that as I was reading. It’s such a beautiful rendition of the psalm.

  • Check this song out by Jon Foreman. Fits well with today’s lesson. :) http://youtu.be/Gh3cO1rTtqE

    • Bridget

      Thank you, that is beautiful.

    • Tina A.

Love this song – my 10 year olds modern dance class did a recital piece to this, so it has a special place in our hearts. Worship through music and dance is especially uplifting with this Psalm.

  • Beautiful passage to meditate on. Reminds me of one of my favorite songs: “Still my anxious heart towards rebellion, let love keep my will upon its knees. Oh God, you are my God, and I will ever praise you…”

  • This scripture never fails to open my eyes to my sin and bring conviction; but it also brings me hope for change and transformation.

  • My sins are staring me down…God shine your light on the path to you. Thank you Jesus for loving me when I feel least lovable. Amen.

    • Shelley

Cici, I’m praying for you this morning, sister. Satan will look for a foothold wherever he can to lead you into sin, and he wants only to infiltrate your heart and convince you that you are unlovable. Please don’t believe the lies, and turn your face to the Father who loves you more than you could ever know. He’s the one who knows your heart’s deepest desires and He’s the one who will love you beyond measure. This Psalm was just what I needed to read this morning… I felt my sins staring me down today, too. It just felt like a heavy, overwhelming weight in my heart, and Satan was trying his best to fill my head with lies. The battle is already won, though… Praise God that Jesus is King, and that His arms are open for us every single day.

  • The reference to hyssop is very interesting. I have a reference book of essential oils and hyssop is listed as good for expelling parasites & a decongestant. Since I have started studying about oils and their properties I have loved finding them mentioned in God’s Word. Oh what an incredible God we serve!!

    • Amy

I was going to look up what hyssop was, but yours was the first comment I read! Thanks for sharing!

  • This scripture touched me this morning as I struggled with thoughts and feelings that need to be dealt with. Definitely appropriate for this "Grace" day as I am reminded that it is only by God's grace that I can experience the cleansing of my heart.

  • Shawn Bowers Buxton

Man, do I need this Grace Day to catch up! Even this morning, it took twice as long to read through this as my sweet, toddler twins interrupted me with supplications and complaints (three times as tried to compose this message!) a gagillion times. And I keep thinking about how God would respond to each of those interruptions. How he does – “hey God, can’t pray right now” “I’ll spend time with you once this list of must-dos is done,” and so on. May we all extend grace to each other in a way that mimics God’s perfect love.

  • Alicia C

My church has been singing this song from Rend Collective, “Create in Me”, lately that puts this psalm and prayer to music! So great!

The Lord is really teaching me to just relax in Him by mediating on His word. Too often I rush through my Bible reading so I can “read more”… I’ve been reading Multiply by Francis Chan with my team and we just completed the part on how to study the Bible. The part that convicted me the most was on how we need to cherish our time in God’s Word because it is literally what it is called- God’s breathed out Word to us. It is living an active. It has a life of it’s own. It’s our loving Father speaking directly to us. We should approach the Bible with respect , reference, and awe because it is so so holy. We have such a privilege to get to read God’s Word! Praying for us all to desire it more and more- to long for it. Learning to just rest in God’s presence by enjoying His word to me. It is so refreshing and rejuvenating. Makes me just fall more and more in love with my Savior when I mediate on His goodness! I have loved Psalm 51 since by freshman year of college when I did a book study with some friends called Glory Revealed. Each chapter has a set of scripture it unpacks. There is a CD to go along with the book that has these passages of scriptures made into songs so it will help you memorize them. Psalm 51 is one of the songs I’ll always have in my heart! Thank you SRT for this study!!

    • Verna

Could you give me more information on the Glory Revealed devotional and cd? I would love to find it somewhere!

  • I’ve really been enjoying these “grace days”. Sometimes I feel like if I’m not having grand revelations or reading huge chunks of scripture then I must not be doing as much as I could. I often feel burned out and inadequate. These grace days make studies manageable and remind me to slow down and take time to meditate on scripture without distraction.

    • Amy

I agree, Taylor! I really enjoyed the grace days in the last study and was hoping they’d be here too. I really enjoy praying through the scripture for someone else and getting a chance to just relax and take in The Word with more focus since it’s a shorter section.

  • MNmomma (heather)

Oh boy was this passage just perfect for me this morning…..just what I was looking/searching for……purify and cleanse me Lord…..blot out my rebellion…..cleanse me……renew me….

  • Against You—You alone—I have sinned
and done this evil in Your sight.

Yes!!!! Only He is the one that we sin against truly. Judgment can only be passed down by Him not society and not our ahem, maybe family members. Oh Yes Lord just let me focus on pleasing you and you alone. Not someone who will pass judgment on me with a heavy soul

    • MCE

Exactly where my mind went. On the other hand, how terrifying that we should receive the judgment we deserve from Him.

I´ve been leaning on a song called Mercy from Bethel that speaks to this. Youtube it… "You delight in showing mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment…"

    • Mary

Wow, this is powerful! I’ve had a lot of friends pass judgement on me in poor decisions I’ve made in the past, and they did way more damage than good. But in being alone you learn that God IS the only one who can judge, and His forgiveness is the only one that truly matters in the end.

  • Lord thank you for your steadfast love and forgiveness! I needed this today.

  • Purify me, Lord! For I need it, and You are the only One who can.

  • Stephanie

I just discovered She Reads the Truth, and it never surprises me how quickly God works. It is definitely only by His grace that this passage, which is so fitting for where I am in my relationship with Him, would be the first I stumble upon via this app. It gives me hope for continued growth in my relationship with him!

    • rachel

welcome, stephanie! i just had to warn you – your life is never going to be the same! :)

    • Kasey Summers

So glad you are here!! SRT has been such a blessing to me!! Praying it is to you as well!

    • Pam B

Welcome! I was told about SRT by a good friend and started reading and studying in January. My quiet time has been radically changed for the better and I know you will be blessed by this community as well. :-)

    • Alexis C.

Welcome! You will find SO much here! All the studies are wonderful. Check out Hymns III, the music is beautiful! And each artists devotion is equally beautiful.

  • David’s prayer – wash me, cleanse me, purify me, make me whiter than snow, blot out my transgression, and ultimately, create in me a new heart – it became reality for us when Jesus came, died and rose again. We can become born again, a new creation, righteous in Him. Now we can rejoice!

  • I was talking with a friend about this passage earlier today. We were talking about the heart, and how one meaning of the Hebrew word heart is "inner shepherd". When David asks God to create in Him a clean heart, he's asking for pure inner shepherd to guide His life.

    • Jennifer Wilde

      Love this, Hannah! :)

    • Zuriel

What do tools do you use for your studies? This is beautiful, I wanted I see the thought behind it. I love how you express deeper meanings behind scriptures. If your tools are too many to name, can you let me know a few favorites?

      • SharonT

I'm not sure where Hanah found her information, but this is what I found re: the ancient Hebrew meaning of the word heart.

"Here is an example of our modern western culture still using a concrete object to express an abstract idea. We often associate the heart with emotions such as love and kindness as in "He has a good heart". This is also true with the Hebrews who saw the heart as the seat of emotion. But unlike us they also saw the heart as the seat of thought whereas we see the brain as the seat of thought. To the ancient Hebrews the heart was the mind including all thoughts including emotions. When we are told to love God with all our heart (Deut 6:5) it is not speaking of an emotional love but to keep our emotions and all our thoughts working for him. The first picture in this Hebrew word is a shepherd staff and represents authority as the shepherd has authority over his flock. The second letter is the picture of the floor plan of the nomadic tent and represents the idea of being inside as the family resides within the tent. When combined they mean "the authority within".
