Lent | Meditation + Confession: Day

#SheSharesTruth | Joshua 1:8-9

Today's Text: Joshua 1:8-9

On Fridays during the season of Lent, we’re opening up our hearts, blogs, notebooks and instagram feeds to share what the Lord is teaching us through His Word. We call it #SheSharesTruth, and you guys have made it something completely uplifting and beautiful. You can read more about the idea behind #SheSharesTruth here, and peruse the list of last week’s shares here.

The short story: As writers we’ve discovered that one of the most effective ways to learn from the Word is to study it, to let it marinate, and then to share it – to share what we’re learning. So each week during Lent, we assign a portion of Scripture (this week Joshua 1:8-9) for you to study and write about. And on #SheReadsTruth Fridays we share what we’ve learned by writing in our own spaces and linking to that here.

She Shares Truth

Here’s the plan:

    • Write your devotional/reflections/response to Joshua 1:8-9 on your personal blog. (Or on Instagram or Facebook with the hashtags #SheSharesTruth and #SheReadsTruth; or even write the comments section here.) Use the graphics below in your post if you’d like!
    • Link to this post so your readers can know about the #SheSharesTruth experiment too.
    • Share the link to your post/Facebook update/Instagram below in the LinkyTool below (where it says “Click To Enter” in blue).
    • Visit each other’s links – at least one or two (maybe the two people who linked up before you?). Comment there – tell them you see them and hear them!

**Please share your heart, sisters. Our desire is not for this to be a time of comparison or sizing up writing abilities or spiritual maturity. Eloquence and insight are lovely, but we know that is not the thing our God calls us to. So, let’s not call each other to that either. Sister, if you feel ill-equipped – GOOD! If you feel like you have so much to learn – GREAT. SO DO WE! Every single time we sit down to write. And if we don’t, are hearts are not in the right place. Let this be a safe place to learn and share and love each other WELL.

  • I found this "experiment" and I am so blessed ! My children are all flying the coup , I am having career change anxiety and my muffin top is not responding to anything I do to get rid of it – yet The Word of God presented in this spot guides and reminds that I am His perfect creation , a twinkle in His eye before He knit me together in my mom's womb and He is with me wherever I go! Joshua 1:8,9—what a wonderful reminder that my running mate is non other than God Himself. How can I NOT get through and over and beyond! And that is why Ladies I am lovin' this site – truth served first thing every morning that I can meditated on throughout the day and night. Thank you all you wonderful ladies for your willingness to be the daughters of God, sisters in Christ and bloggers!

Angela, just seeing this now. Immediately stopped and prayed for you and all the family. I had two family members comit suicide in January, within 16 days of each other. It is an awful thing for loved ones to sort out.

Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Psalm 61:2

I was a little late to the party, but God clearly spoke to me this morning. I’m up at #55, or you can find it here.

    Discouraged? Get up!

I can’t wait to read more of your posts today. I hope they decide to keep this up after lent.

I love that SRT is doing this segment on confession! I just attended a service on Wednesday night around Psalm 51 (David's confession about his sin, specifically pertaining to the Bathsheba thing) and confession in general, so this is quite timely! The thing I most drew from that service was the fact that "confession is the front door to healing and grace", and the lines David wrote about God valuing a truly broken heart.

I didn't plan ahead enough this morning to link up with you all, but I love seeing how many have! So cool, I'll have to double back later and read some of them. :)

I broke down this week's meditation verse (Joshua 1:8-9): Living the Word and knowing it by heart –> acting on it –> leads you to being on the right path that God wants for you –> confidence –> you are never alone.

This week's verse I found goes along with what we are studying: meditation. Very recently I rediscovered the importance of memorizing scripture. When I am trying to figure things out and deal with life issues, I find it so much better to reflect on verses and what God has to say, rather than grasping for my own answer. His way > our way.

My prayer is that me and my family continually meditate on His word. Not just when an issue arises and we feel we "need" it. We always need God's reminders!!

God is changing my heart, showing me that he has different measures of success. Thank you for challenging me in this way ladies! Blogged about this here: http://www.thedempsterlogbook.com/2014/04/success

  • Ha! I had to laugh when I saw these verses. God has already shown them to me, as a mother bird would show her babies, the gentle nudging out of the nest. For far too long I had waited for God's calling on where to proceed next, all in my frustration. I was ready, or so I thought, to venture out in my faith, but God…
God, in all His wisdom, had been telling me it was not time — that I was not ready. Until one day there was a need for someone to lead a women's bible study at church, and I said "Oh, no…." . I'm not confident in leading a group of women who's faith has been surer for far longer than mine. And my bible knowledge? I love this very word of God, but for me to actually present it? Who was I fooling? I was terrified…
And then God very deliberately and dramatically put these verses in front of my nose, and not just once. 'Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened and do not be dismayed. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go". Joshua 1:9
How do you say no to that? It was where God wanted me, no matter how incompetent I felt. He would be with me — He promised.
Looking back now, I see His hand and I know I felt His courage, even though my very knees were shaking and my voice trembled as I led this very patient group of women for the very first time. God gave me words, He gave me scripture (sometimes at the very last minute) and He gave me a deep love for these women. And these women? They all said they felt a new excitement in the word, a new enthusiasm, a breath of fresh air — perhaps the very breath of God. Yes, He is with us, wherever we go. He gives us courage and guidance, and He led that study…I was just His vessel. For He is a mighty and faithful God.

  • Joshua 1:8-9 "This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall be successful. I hereby command you: Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." NRSV

I love these verses. They serve to remind us that even when we know the right thing to do, sometimes we are weak and lack the courage to act upon them. (Think Paul….wretched man that I am…can't do what I want!) Besides trusting that God is always with us, if we help ourselves and/or each other (ask Jesus to help us) take a small, baby step in the direction of whatever we are afraid to take on full force, each day, over time we will find ourselves becoming stronger and more courageous. Maybe it starts with just a positive thought or a quick prayer, then it may be some small action toward the goal. Baby steps, sisters! With God's help, they will get us there! Yes!
BTW, reading SheReadsTruth is one such baby step for me each day! Thanks, organizing sisters, for helping us meditate on the Word together! Blest be the tie that binds…our hearts in Christian love!

I love the chance to write on the selected Bible verses. Not because I am such a good writer, but first the verses stay with me, and second I really have to take the verses and apply them to my life…thank you. God Bless.

  • I have had Joshua 1:9 memorized since I was a child afraid of heights but I find as an adult now that the verse and the one before it have so much meaning to me now and in different ways. I'm convicted about how I let many others things besides the words of my God depart from my mouth, yet I'm also filled with hope. I think meditation is hard to do but as I strive to do it more I'm excited to see how God works in my life. I'm also filled with hope about the power God gives when I trust in Him even in times of despair. Thank you so much for this ministry I have been reading this since the inception and am so excited to see where it goes.

Courage, Not the kind of courage the lion was pursuing in the wizard of oz. It’s the insurmountable courage that must come from trusting and knowing who is the God that saved you and me. Courage, to face obstacles while believing God will never, ever leave us, though it may feel like he has.

  • Good morning everyone. Blessings in Jesus Name. My devotional can be read below.

    Joshua 1:8-9 KJV
    8) This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is rewritten therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
    9) Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

After Moses' death, God called Joshua, the son of Nun and commanded him to take up where Moses had left off in leading his people to the land He had promised their fathers in the wilderness.
God cannot lie, therefore whatever He promises, that He will fulfill.
Likewise His commandments changeth not.(Joshua 1:8)"This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is rewritten therein." This book of law was written by Moses as commanded by God and it is the same law that we are required to meditate on day and night.
By doing God's will and keeping His commandments, our ways shall be prosperous and we shall have good success.

Be strong and of a good courage.
God has not given us the Spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind.(2 Tomothy 1:7) We should therefore never be afraid nor dismayed, but be strong and courageous, for He is with us wherever we go as He promised to never leave us nor forsake us.

Good morning! I, too, have enjoyed these verses this week! It was difficult to see how everything God was speaking went together, but hopefully this simplified version makes sense! Mine is number 15 above or right here:

This week was really tough for me. I meditated on those verses all week, and I couldn't put anything into words. I realized that I was looking for the safe confession–the one that doesn't bare one's soul. So, this is me being more vulnerable than I'm used to, but it's the only thing that my heart would allow my mind to confess. Now that it's done, I can't imagine having gone in any other direction. Have a wonderful weekend, friends. May your hearts, too, be at rest.
