Today's Text: Matthew 4:4

Text: Matthew 4:4

We believe that memorizing scripture is one of the best ways to carry the Word of our God with us wherever we go – to have God-breathed truth and instruction and reproof in our hearts and minds as we live unto Him each day.

For our Weekly Truth, we’ve chosen Matthew 4:4. Such an appropriate verse to write on our hearts in this Lenten season, and so relevant to the topic of Scripture memorization in general.

But he answered, “It is written,
“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Matthew 4:4, ESV

Write it down – copy it twenty times if that helps! Pray it. Save an image of this verse to your phone’s lockscreen. We want to be a community that is intentional about Scripture memorization. Join us?

The word of God is ever refreshing.

  • desiree morain

    I love it

  • JESUS ANSWER. FOCUS ON GODS PURPOSE, DONT TEST GOD. FOCUS ON GODS PLAN. NO COMPROMISE WITH EVIL . FOCUS ON GODS PERSON. EVERY WORD FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD. KEEP LOOKING UP LADIES. GOD BLESS

  • I am terrible at memorization. I can memorize it but two days later I won't remember. Anyway I love the idea if taking a screen shit and putting it on my phone and ipad home screen. This will stimulate me it repeat it and maybe help me remember.

  • I just got finished downloading Matthew 4:4 on to my phones lockdown and I can't wait to start memorizing it!!!! I know I have read this Bible verse many a time and seen it on cards and such, but reading it in the light of Lent and knowing I want to be able to be in Gods presence more and more (specially now) This verse really!!!! Hit home to me tonight……… Thank-you SRT ladies for ALL you do through The Lord have a great evening……….
"Jesus answered, "It is written in the scriptures, 'A person does not live by eating bread, bit by everything God says."

  • Punkswife

Thank you for encouraging us to memorize His word. He nourishes us in a way physical food cannot. This scripture stirred my heart to write an entry in my blog. I love how He continually guides us. We need only follow His direction.

    ~Be blessed and a blessing

  • Amen. This is a great verse for us inscribe on our hearts, a recall frequently!

  • You girls are so encouraging on days like this. I pray that the Lord would show Himself to me, discipline me, and make me to fall in love with who He is and what He is doing all over again. Father, be with us this lenten season– we need more of you! Don't let satan highjack our desire to know and love you more.
Blessings, sisters. May God make His face to shine brightly upon you all today, in all truth and righteousness. xo

    • Brendasan01

Amen! I want more of Him!
Lord, help me to seek you in all I say and do.

  • "Man shall not live by bread alone;
but by every word that comes form the mouth of God." Matthew 4:4

Well, I tried but didn't succeed. That does not mean I have given up. With your help "I CAN DO IT" :-) I tried to ender my reflection on the website. I typed in "The Lowest Point" thinking that was the title then entered the #shereadstruth/Psalm130 and it said my entry was successfully enter, however I didn't enter my thoughts, when and where do I do this? Your help would be much appreciated. I will log on later today and hopefully will get it corrected.

  • So when Jesus is in this situation he is quoting verses from back in Deuteronomy – He already has this verse memorized! I wanted to go back to the Scripture Jesus was referencing (Deuteronomy 8:3), and a few verses below I'd underlined this:
Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you. So you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God by walking in His ways and by fearing Him. (Deut. 8: 5-6)
I wanted to share this with everyone as it goes back to what we studied yesterday in Hebrews 12, and the topic of discipline. While we focused more on the endurance than the discipline in that chapter, the focus of discipline and how our Heavenly Father uses it with such love for us.
Happy Sunday beautiful sisters! Be blessed, and be a blessing, today!

    • Darla

Thank you for sharing Kat. I love that Jesus, too, memorized the scripture.

Also I use the same at the end of most of my posts by saying 'Be blessed and a blessing'. Great minds. :)

      Have a beautiful day.

I have a funny story for y'all! My fiancé (34 more days until it's HUSBAND!) is a pastor and has two adorable dogs that are sometimes trouble makers. Charlie is an American bulldog puppy and Bella is a year old golden retriever. One day he comes home and his bible that he got when he was ordained was totally gone, except of a few little bits on the ground. We weren't sure what happened to it until Charlie walked into the room a few days later and starts throwing up chunks of the bible!!! After freaking out and being totally grossed out, we decided that they must have been reading Matthew 4:4 while we weren't home and literally ate every word from the mouth of God!!!
Hope this helps your memorization process, or at least makes you smile!
    Happy Sunday beautiful!!! :)

    • Liz S

Aw, that is so cute! Beats the time I returned a library book sheepishly with the corner chewed! The book was about how to raise a good puppy!

    • AnnaLee

Love this!! My dog chewed up my bible too… even did that thing where they growl when you try to take it away, because they are trying to protect "their food!" Hahaha. I pray I'd crave God's word just as much– not as angrily, but just as aggressively! Be blessed sister! xo

    • Rachel Nordgren

      1. CONGRATS on getting married soon! Whoo hop!
      2. That's a hilarious story. As a fellow dog owner, I can relate and it made me laugh a lot :)

    • tina

      Dogs huh….God bless them!!!!
Congratulations on your up coming nuptials….DearlylOved….and you are! Blessings….x

    • pamelaprussel

Awesome! Love this story. Some smart dogs there!

    • Ashley Lynn

A very cute story! Puts a whole new meaning to literally living out the word! I think I would have freaked out a little bit, too! :)

  • My Father is working a change in me. Did some of you, like me, grow up in an environmrnt where the
bible was used to bring judgement and fear? How the enemy of my soul has tried to keep me in that place, to the point that reading the Word seems like something I SHOULD do to please God! Taking part in SRT has helped me so much to see in His Word the guidance, comfort, truth and promise that is mine as His child. He is growing a love for His Word in my heart and my daily life. THANK GOD he never stops pulling us to his heart! Even me, who has been a Christian for most of my life. God be with you today.

    • AnnaLee

Although I never grew up in an environment like this, Satan totally uses the "should" clause all the time. I pray that the Lord would show me– show all of us– His unfailing kindness and pursuit of us all today. That it wouldn't be a should or have to, but a "wow, Lord, I can't help but love you!" Happy Sunday sister.

  • Janee White

This couldn't have come at a more perfect time. Yesterday, I declared war on my 'comfort zones that serve only comfort food'. And today I wake to this Word that reminds me that I should not live on bread alone, but on EVERY Word that comes from the mouth of God. Not just a few words, or a few sentences – but on EVERY Word that comes from the Mouth of God. Not on every word found on the cover of a magazine. Not on every word found in television ads. Not on every page of every diet/health/nutrition guide, but on EVERY Word that comes from the Mouth of God.

Oh Lord, I find myself at this crossroad, yet again. But today Lord, I declare Victory. Death and disease have already been defeated. The lies have been exposed and the Truth has been revealed. Today, Lord, I choose – yes, I said I choose – to live a life that comes FROM that victory, and I give up the fight of working towards the victory. You beat death. You healed all that came to You. Well I am here, risen from the dead and healed by Your Word. I begged fo a new life and You gave me one. Today Lord, I am embracing that New Life and honoring You by honoring the temple Your Holy Spirit resides in.

Thank you Lord, for Victory. That Your daughters may live free on every Word that comes from Your Mouth, no longer captive to the lies of this World.

    • dearlyl0ved

Have you seen the book Made to Crave? May be a good help for you!

      • Janee White

I have – in fact I have read it at least 3 times. Thank you for your suggestion, it truly is an amazing book. Maybe now that I am publically committed to this New Life – i'll actually apply the principles that have been engraved upon my heart.

  • rachlea06

Lock screen set — a good way to remind myself to stop, go to God's word, and receive my daily nourishment. And the earlier, the better! Have a great Sunday, ladies!

  • JessicaLoves___

In case anyone's interested … Another memorization help is: http://scripturetyper.com/. And it really works, at least for me. I just add the Weekly Truth verse in each week and go.

  • Hey ladies! I’ve only been a part of one other SRT plan, but I couldn’t stay away! Matthew 4:4 is another reminder for me about how important the Word of God is to our everyday lives. How does God show us He loves us? Better YET how does He tell us? HIS WORD! and only through the Word of God, our hearts are transformed! We are all in need of that daily, lifelong transformation, but we are well on our way! As Paul says in one of my favorite passages in Philippians:

“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (3 v12-14)

    Happy Sunday!

    • AnnaLee

Amen! I love that verse! Let's keep striving and forgetting what is behind us!

  • Joanne Sher

Lord, I want to feast on Your Word. I need it to truly live. Let my reading, meditating, and living by it be as important to me as satisfying my physical hunger. Love this verse!

  • Happy Sunday ladies.

The word of God is a necessity, we can't live for Christ without having instructions to follow – His word is our guide book. Just as we can't live without food, we cannot live without the word of God.

Thank you SRT for an opportunity for women to enter God's Word daily.

  • Wow.
.this is my first day starting on this journey with SRT and how amazing that it would begin with such truth! I am fully aware of the need for Gods word but find myself lost and overwhelmed at times in it….I am excited and encouraged to walk closer to God and learn his word for myself! Soooo thankful for His Word…have a blessed day to all!!

    • dearlyl0ved

      Welcome, sister!!! Xo

Be blessed and a blessing. xoxo

    • Rachel Nordgren

Hi, Jovette! You're brave to comment on your first day…I think I snuck along for a month before I said anything ;) Welcome to She Reads Truth! We're glad you're here!

    • Amanda Williams

      Welcome, Jovette! We're glad you're here. :)

  • megkwhit

Perfect verse for Lent! I need to remember this more often in my life, that what I truly need is God and his Word. Not the hundred other things that I think I "need". I need only Him.

    Have a wonderful Sunday ladies!!

  • “It is written,
“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”………how true

Bread = food for the body…….But God…..God's word is sustenance for the soul, it is life giving, it is hope, when you think there is no hope, it is freedom setting when you are bound in chains of sin, greed, lust, unforgiveness, unworthiness, etc….it is love everlasting, it is faithful, right there in your hand, it is comforting when no earthly arms will do…..it is the book of life….from the mouth of a God who wants the very best, for a people whom He so truly loves….

I will write this on my heart today, to remind me that God's word is very very very much better than a handshake in business… IT IS WRITTEN……AMEN.
Morning, and blessings over you all my precious sisters and friends this beautiful day the Lord has made….x x x xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • How refreshing!

A reminder of the importance of seeking God in His word. His word is bread for our soul- it provides all the answers. Thank you dolls for this :) xx
