Text: 2 Peter

If you’ve ever spent time with someone in the twilight of his or her life, you understand the wisdom they often have to offer, and at times, are quite desperate to share.  We are privileged to get the opportunity to soak in such wisdom with Peter in his writings in 2 Peter.

Ladies, Peter 2 is a short book, but it’s chock full of some major messages.  And those messages come from a Chosen source.  Peter was a servant by choice, but an apostle by divine appointment.  As such, we should perk our ears to the wisdom he shares near the end of his life.

Encouraging descriptions of our experience in Christ.
Powerful warnings of false teachers.
The guarantee of Christ’s joyful return.

Though Peter lived in a much different time, these messages are timeless, if not extra necessary, today. They speak of first-hand experiences of a man who walked – literally walked – with Christ.  And most importantly, they speak of Truth, the most timeless message of all.

As we prepare for this weeklong study today, we invite you to take a cursory reading of 2 Peter, familiarizing yourself with the central messages.  Then, come back tomorrow when we’ll start to dig deeper.

Come, take in Peter’s experience and wisdom.  Soak it in.  Share what words reach you.  Your own perspective and insight is so valuable to our study.

We look forward to this week of learning and growing with you!

you possess a excellent weblog here! do you need to cook some invite posts in this little blog?

Can’t wait to dig deeper into 2 Peter. What always catches me is how a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like a day. Might seem like we have lots of time but thank God for his patience and not wanting anyone to perish, but wants to give us all time to come to repentance. I don’t want to perish like those who didn’t pay attention to Noah. He keeps his promises and this world will also to come to that time of judgment.

  • The word "respond" jumped out at me in verse 5. This is an action step. In order to grow in your faith you must DO SOMETHING. God has given us the tools we need, we must only respond. Love it!

  • “Peter was a servant by choice, but an apostle by divine appointment.” Those words really got my attention because I’ve recently been called to teach & preach God’s Word. What a revelation this is!!!

  • ladies please pray for me…for the longest I was an avid reader of the Word. For awhile I longed for a group of women to read and share the Word. I came across SRT. I knew it was God answering my prayers. I have started and stopped many devotionals. I signed up for this one hoping and praying I’ll stick to it. it’s only 8 days….Thanks for all your comments and support. GBU SRT WRITERS AND GROUP.

      Marie-
So glad you are here! Thank you for sharing and being vulnerable. Being diligent to read the word is difficult sometimes! I pray that this is a LONG season of consistent time soaking in His Word. That you would encounter Jesus more and more through each day. And that you would find His joy through His LIFE-giving Word.

      Blessings!

  • There is no mistaken that Peter’s time with Paul was well spent. It is also evident that Peter clearly remembers the life changing times that he spent with our Lord and Savior.

Luke 22:32 appears to be on his mind as he writes words of encouragement. Peter’s faith remained intact through all the trials and tribulations in his life. That day in which he boldly declared “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” It is that same faith on which the Church still stands today! Christ the Solid Rock; the very gates of hell cannot prevail against it.

Peter believe it until the very end. Like Paul, he fought the good fight and he finished the race just as strongly as he had begun it.

  • I love this study and 2Peter contains one of my favorite passages: "His Devine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness". A long time ago I heard great advice from Mary Welchel of "The Christian working woman". It was a radio broadcast that I use to listen to in the mornings. She said to take this passage in 2Peter 1:5-7, and next to verse 5 write the age you are today then make an arrow down to verse 5 and write the age you will be in 10 years from now. She said to use this passage as a spiritual growth gage for yourself, It is great advice and a good gage to guide the next 10 years of our lives! So blessed and looking forward to this study with you all!

    • Anita

Correction to what I wrote above…."arrow down to verse 7 and write the age you will be 10 years from now". Sorry about the typo! Hope someone will find this a valuable tool for their growth! Blessings!

  • 2 Peter 1:10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble.

My take-away today is an example for me to follow. Peter is giving me a whole lot of information and examples. God has given me divine power for a Godly life. Also, I’ve been given great and precious promises. My calling and election are important parts of my salvation and Peter is encouraging me to make sure they are intact. He also assures me that when I do these things mentioned in these verses that I will not stumble.

My Prayer Today: Lord thank you for giving me everything I need for life and Godliness. Lord give me a fresh fling of your Holy Spirit and please help me to walk day in your Word. Its in Jesus Name I pray! Amen

  • Are there ever going to be any more She Reads Truth Journals?

    • Jesyka

We are working on getting more journals but it may be a while still. Hopefully by the end of the year.
      Thank you for asking!

  • Oooh! There are some meaty things to explore in 2 Peter! Years ago, I led a women's bible study on 1 & 2 Peter, but so many new revelations have been popping out at me that touch my heart where I'm at today. I love the LIVING word; applicable at every age and stage we grow into!

This morning, 3:9 spoke to me:

"The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent." NLT

I'm so thankful that the Lord didn't just give up on me, but gave me the time to come and repent. I'm encouraged by this as I pray for loved ones who are still hashing out their faith with God. He is patient with them also. Love, love, love!

  • hazelmaddie

Hello ladies! I've posted before as Madeline C. and have now changed my name…long story, let's not get into it :)

I am very excited for this study. It's so encouraging to see Peter struggle as a young man, then grow in a mature faith. And I love that we can share in his wisdom! My prayer is that these words soak into us and Christ becomes even more obvious in us!

  • Morning ladies. I would like to start by saying what a blessing it is to have found this devotional! (Thanks to a friend sharing on Instagram) I have completed the last 3 reading plans with you all and feel so accomplished and enlightened. I appreciate how easy to read and relatable the plans are.

1 Peter was by far a favorite but as I read 2 Peter I see it is filled with wisdom as well. Like many others 2 Peter 1:5-8 really spoke to me. I see all those qualities as building blocks and I have to remind myself that I must continue to build, not just reach one block and stop. Also I must give myself credit for the progress I made instead of expecting to acquire all those characteristics instantly. (Part of my perfectionist troubles). Again I’m so glad to be racing with you all. Be blessed!

  • I am extremely excited to read through this book- I know that God will work wonders in all of us through it, as He always does. Yesterday, I took a hike up to the top of a mountain with a christian organization, and I sat on the mountain with God right after the sun set and looked out on everything He had made. He told me to put my ex-boyfriend and his/the relationship's hold on me in the past, for once and for all. I had let him go, but it was like the affect the relationship had on me was still standing close to me, instead of being where it belongs- in the past. I now think that through God's grace, I am only in the thick of putting it to rest, but that I am ready and willing with patience to let God work in and heal this part of my life.
Relevant to this is 2Peter 1:3-4 and 9-11. Now, more than ever, is my time (and really, all of ours) to truly claim and confirm my calling and election by God to be his whole-hearted servants and children. Chapter 3 verses 8 and 9 also resonated: God is not slow to fulfill his promises, but is PATIENT with us. Most of the time, I feel that I'm being patient towards God, when truly, it is Him being patient with me! He knows where I'm at in life and what I can handle infinitely more than I can. Praise him for that!!!!
If I already feel this strongly about the affect 2 Peter is having in my life, I cannot WAIT until we dive in more. A week always changes a lot- and I'm excited for what this one has in store.
I love you ladies! I'm praying you'd have a blessed Thursday!

    • Jesyka

AnnaLee-thank you for sharing what The Lord is showing you through His word!

  • I’m really excited about starting this journey with all you ladies. I look forward to studying the word more in depth and hope to also learn from all of you. Very thankful to have found this. God bless you all.

  • I just read 2 Peter and I am excited to dig deeper with you Ladies! Peace and Blessings to you all

  • I am so excited about reading 2 Peter! After reading it this morning, I see that it is chock full of wisdom that I can't wait to dive into with you ladies!! I totally agree with Kimmie about 2 Peter 2:5-8. I need to reflect on those traits daily. I also especially loved the 2nd chapter about false prophets and teachers. I pray that we all stay deep in our word and in constant conversation with our Lord so that we can recognize those false teachers that "blaspheme the way of the truth" and speak the way of the truth to those that they lead astray.

Looking forward to diving into 2 Peter with you wonderful women of God!

  • rocknitat55

Good morning SRT, I’m excited to to start this 2nd study on Peter.
As I was reading this morning the following stuck out for me:
    2PE 1:5-7 KJV
And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
These qualities are sooo necessary in our walk. But each builds on the other, you can’t obtain one without the other. Building blocks… Process… Process. Our life, our journey is part of the process.
I think this is important to remember when we come in contact with a sis or bro who may not have reach one of these qualities.

Twilight, boy I had to smile. Wow is your 50’s twilight? There is a price for wisdom, but I would take nothing for the journey!

    Everyone have a terrific Thursday!

  • I am so excited to begin this new study with all of you. The list of "traits" in 2 Peter 1:5-7 really resonated with me today. I feel like I should pin them up where I can see them everyday….reminding myself what I should be striving for daily. Virtue/goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness/mutual affection and LOVE. Qualities that will keep me effective and productive in my knowledge of The Lord. If I make every effort to do these things, the word says I will never stumble! WOW! What hope I have in him today. Thank you again, to all of you wonderful ladies who bring us SRT every day, encouraging us to have knowledge and love of His word. Blessings to you.

  • Hi friends my name is Bree and I’m going to join y’all in 2 Peter. I’ve tried to keep up with some of the other readings but life got in the way. Hope to stay in the game this time.Looking forward to 2 Peter.

  • This is one of my favorite books for sure! I could camp for a while on 2:9 but I'll wait for us to get there. lol :)

  • Leenda324

Reading this it’s hard to believe this articulate author is the same gruff but well-intentioned guy in the Gospels. Talk about transformation! The word “precious” jumped out at me: Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ … Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

I also love how he gives us benchmarks of fruit and maturity kind of like the growth charts at the pediatrician: oh, you’ve got virtue, knowledge and self-control. OK, 75th percentile in growth. :)

Anyway looking forward to another rich experience with SRT!

    1-7, 16, 21 NKJV)

    • rocknitat55

I know, seems like a complete transformation.
Guess it just goes to show u can’t judge a book by its cover.
      Blessings sis.

    • Jesyka

Loved the benchmark comparison. I hadn't thought of it that way. Thank you for sharing!

  • As I browsed through 2 Peter this morning I kept focusing on the warning of false teachers. I believe that false teachers can come in many different forms, but the one that stuck out today was how people can slowly construe the meaning of the Word and twist the words to match what they want. For example, we are so polarized in the US in regards to politics and certain topics. You can take the same topic, welfare benefits for example, and see Christians and Non-Christians alike on both sides twist and construe the Word to make their argument. Regardless of what side you're on, we need to be cautious of this twisting and construing. For me, the best way to deal with this is to quiet all the disagreements "out there," and just open the Bible and read God's words. Whatever meaning I get from them is what matters…not what people construe.

Excited to dig deeper into 2 Peter with all of you!

    • rocknitat55

Allison, you make such a valid point.
It has always amazed me when counseling, especially people of faith
How they can go into God’d Word and find scriptures to support CRAZY…
We must always remember that God’s Word bring light not darkness…
      Peace not confusion.

  • I'm so thankful I found shereadstruth – just finished reading 2 Peter and I'm really looking forward to this study! Have a blessed day everybody!

  • well, like Candacejo, i'm up early this morning too! i also just read the whole book.. Peters words are wise and cautionary. i look forward to digging deeper through the devotionals and all of your insights.

  • Jessica Johnson

2 Peter still isn't showing up on YouVerse app. I will keep looking, I hope it's just not for me. Excited to join in on this:D

  • Candacejo

Early riser today! What a blessing to read the entire book of 2 Peter this morning! I read it in the NLT this time and saw a few things I had not seen before, love it when that happens!

"For we were not making up clever stories when we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We saw his majestic splendor with our own eyes…" 2 Peter 1:16 NLT

Like Sarah said, Peter literally walked with our Lord so he was there and he tasted, he touched, he felt, he knew…."We saw it with our own eyes!"

    Can't wait! Blessings everyone!

  • Lauren Williams

I have a feeling this is going to be a great study. I just finished reading 2 Peter and can relate to the 2nd chapter a lot this week. I have strong feelings against abortion and I was having a discussion with a co-worker who I know is a Christian woman but yet agrees with abortion and is pro-choice. This breaks my heart and it is more troubling to hear this side from a Christian women than a non-believer that is also pro-choice. I think this fits in today's times of "false teachers". I was courageous enough to hold my stance and tell her that child is still a baby no matter if it is at 20 weeks or 24 weeks. It is important that as women we keep in mind that "false teachers" can come in forms of Christians and non-Christians.

    • Candacejo

Wow, Lauren that is dis-heartening to say the least! I think the media does so much to influence the thinking of people. We would never have dreamed of these things 40 years ago being so easily accepted but when they are pushed through every type of media over and over again as acceptable and "the norm" and majority people are more ready to jump on the bandwagon. They don't want to be in the minority. And also the enemy has just simply blinded their minds!

Praying for you this morning to be a light!

  • Just wanted to take a moment and say THANK YOU! May you all be blessed! These reading plans have touched me in ways I can’t explain, it’s like God Himself is speaking right to me.. The topic I need at the time needed.. I’m just amazed. I pray God continues to use your work to speak to others and to continue the changes He has started in my life. I am loving all this, every step of the way! Thank u for the time and efforts you put into this. Using the reading plans has made it so easy to go back to having Gods word truly be daily bread for my soul and I look forward to it everyday! Continue in what you do and be blessed!

  • Leenda324

Glad to get this caws wondering what was next!

  • Ruth Rouchard

I can’t seem to find the new plan on the You Version app. Any suggestions?
