  • Dear Jesus
    help me be content

  • What things do you need to start focusing on that will help you draw closer to Christ?

Hmmm…trying to think if there’s anything NEW I should start focusing on. I know I want to focus MORE on things I’m already doing like getting in The Word, committing scripture to memory, & prayer.

That is it! Prayer. I’ve been missing out on significant prayer time lately. Especially since starting this devotional–reading the accompanying scripture, reading others posts and then posting something myself has taken so much more of my time in the morning, that I started doing the devotional later in the day. Well, I still read it in the morning but then come back and read others comments and do my posting later in the day, so I have more time in the morning for actual Bible reading and prayer.

Can’t develop a close relationship with someone unless you spend significant time with them. I need to be spending more time with just me & Jesus.

Hope y’all had a blessed day! Good night!

  • I adore 6:6-8 "a devout life does bring wealth, but it's the rich simplicity of being yourself before God. Since we entered the world penniless, and will leave penniless, if we have bread on the table and shoes on our feet, that's enough."

The obvious one is that idea of physical possessions. I get that. I think it's something that we all struggle with in this society that we live in. But I'm often reminded when the greedy part of myself consumes me…of the pure happniess that so many of the East Timorese people exuded when I visited them. They didn't need stuff. They got that life is rich without possessions.

The verse the struck me is the ides "the rich simplicity of being yourself before God." God loves us no matter what. It was only when I enabled myself to BE who I was (Good bad and ugly) before God, was I able to forge the relationship with him. I think that begs that we get real with who we actually are, unlayer the layers and let go of the fear. There's nothing to fear, even the mistakes we've made, if we choose to be simple and honest about everything with God.

  • Sorry, I am posting this so late. Even for being on Arizona time, I know this is late. But I had so many thoughts about this particular passage and reading, that I just wrote it out as a blog post. Feel free to read it all if you are so inclined!

    It is here:

  • Oh the Lord has been working on this area of contentment in me for the last 6 years. When will I truly rest in the knowledge that my Father always provides everything that I need? I don't NEED all the fancy stuff that's out there. I'm pretty sure Jesus is not at all impressed by all the consumerism that his modern "disciples" subscribe to. I wonder if it makes the Father sad when he sees how entangled we get with our stuff. He wants us to be free! I'm sensing a serious purging of some "stuff" is in order.

Father, thank you that I can rest in You. That I have all that I need in You. That I can come to you, simply, like a little child and You accept me and love me. As I am. Bless and speak to each one who passes by this page today. In Jesus name, Amen.

Cynthia, Thank you soo much for your help!! I really need it. I’m getting conflicting information which is why yesterday’s reading hit home- v.6,7
“For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened by sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.” ESV
Ive been looking for answers for years but without committing to Christ. Being chronically ill, I allowed missionaries from two different faiths into my home…BIG MISTAKE! Although I will say neither brought me to faith, I thought at least I’m getting some bible study in and it “can’t hurt”….
Wrong! And one woman insists that Satan is running everything on earth, that in the desert when the devil tempts Jesus he offered Christ all the governments of his kingdom- which he could not do unless they were “his” to offer, so therefore he has dominion over the earth….? :(
I came to Christ thru wanting a change and finding SRT!! :) And even tho its not easy, I’ve been checking out a couple of churches. One of which I’ll be going to again this morning. I hope to have found my “home”!! (And then I won’t have to bother you gals with all my questions, lol!) How I long for the day that I’m so saturated in His word that I’ll know scriptures for any need or question!
And Cynthia, your “Jesus beside you” is just priceless for navigating this world- a million Thanks! :)

  • I too like lisabethjean need to "be content with what the lord has given me" Remembering all things come from Christ who loves us!
Are we as humans ever content…really? Unless I focus on Christ and the words he has given me I become more discontent and forget just how lucky I am for he love us OHHH how he loves us! I need to remember that daily, be thankful and share his love. This song came to mind as I was in this devo today so thought I'd share it! Here's to another day of remembering and sharing his love!

continued… Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life."

I read on twitter last night that a helpful person is a happy person. Wow! lord, I want to spend my life being helpful.

    1 Timothy 6:4, 6, 9, 11, 17-19 NIV

"they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions

How often do I do this, by gossiping, etc.? oh Lord, I don't want to be lumped into this mold.

But godliness with contentment is great gain. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.

How often do we/I think having more money will solve everything? yet it won't.

now here is what I think answers the question in the devotional:

But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.

  • Thanks so much Cynthia for your summary.I really needed this before going to Church. I will "draw near to the throne of God , beg for mercy " and I will receive His grace. I now focus on "Jesus beside me", I will read and study God's word and demonstrate love to all each day. He has made us in His image and He has given us all the tools we need to resist all evil. What a loving, forgiving Father we have. Blessings to all on this beautiful day, filled with so many opportunities for worship and praise.

Unfortunately, much of my "malcontentness" stems from my love & desire for earthly possessions. Paul here is teaching Timothy about the traps people fall into trying to get more money & "stuff"; and about the hollowness & pride that wealthy people can develop.

So, verse 20 states: " Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care…"

I AM so wealthy! I have a wonderful husband who cherishes me. I have 3 fine sons who are growing into incredible young men. I have a comfortable house. I have enough to eat… Thank you, God, for entrusting all this to me. Help me to treasure what you've blessed me with here on earth.

  • What things do you need to start focusing on that will help you draw closer to Christ?

I need to start focusing on God’s Word.

  • @Ellen MR: Although satan is the prince of darkness of this world, it is only because we gave authority given to us by God over to him. Make no mistake though God is Sovereign and still in control, Jesus is King of kings and Lord of lords, and Holy Spirit was sent to help us until the end. God only allows satan permission to due certain things (remember Job?). God and His Word does not change; we as Christians have still been given authority!

Nothing happens in the physical unless it has first occurred in the Spiritual. Whatever we (Christians) loose on earth will be loosed in heaven; whatever we bind on earth will be bound in heaven. This is the power of prayer given to us from the beginning. Our words haves power and we are much stronger than we give ourselves credit.

What things do you need to start focusing on that will help you draw closer to Christ?

We must focus on who we are in Christ, holding in to the authority which has been given each of us. I realize we are all tired and things have not turn out just as we expected them but…YES God is still in control.

It is times like NOW that we must draw closer than ever to Christ. We must hold fast to our profession of faith. Yes we must resist the devil and he will flee. BUT…the whole verse states: So humble (submit, KJV) yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (James 4:7 NLT). The Word tell us to draw close to God and He will draw close to us…in times like these…WE NEED HIM CLOSE.
