Have you ever told a friend that you’d pray for them, but then not really been sure exactly what to pray? Or worse, forget the commitment that you made to your friend to pray all together?

In this passage, Paul and Timothy (note the occurrences of “we” and “us” throughout this section) tell their “partners in the gospel” at Colossae that they’re praying for them – not just individually, but in tandem. (Remember Jesus’ words in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or more are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” Paul and Timothy are living Christ’s words!) And in this passage, they tell the Colossians (and us!) just exactly how they are lifting their brothers and sisters in Christ before the throne.

Now, if you’re a list maker like me, you’re going to love this next part. (I can’t help but want to bust out some bullet points and really study this ministry of intercession!) Let’s make a list together of the specific things Paul and Timothy are praying, shall we?

Praying For Our Friends
1. Thank God for them. (v. 3)
2. Ask that they will be given wise minds with spirits attuned to his will (v. 9)
3. Pray that they will honor God with their lives (v. 10)
4. Pray that they will bear fruit in every good work (v. 10)
5. Pray that they will increase in the knowledge of God (v. 10)
6. Ask that they will be strengthened in all power with endurance and patience with joy. (v. 11)
7. Ask that they would also give thanks to the Father from Whom their inheritance comes (v. 12)

So, what now?

Sisters, what if we prayed these things with and for our friends (our partners in the gospel) faithfully?

What if they prayed these things for us?

I encourage you to commit with a friend (in your church, in your city, in another country, or in the SheReadsTruth community) to pray these specific things for each other this week (and beyond, of course!). Don’t have anyone you can ask to pray with and for you? Leave a comment below and ask! We’re a community who reads truth together and prays together. Let’s use God’s Word as our guide to pray – really pray – in tandem for our partners in the gospel!

Good Evening sisters!

Can I just praise God for this forum right quick? I’m so glad I stumbled across this on my YouVersion bible! I’m loving this already!

Well, I too sometimes feel awkward praying for others so this definitely made me think, how much strong would our spiritual walks be? How much more accountable would we feel if we had someone there to let us know when we stray? Amazing how God puts people in our lives to confirm what He’s been speaking to us individually…my prayer had been to find women seeking after Gods heart who I could fellowship with!

Im praying for you all but if anyone would like to connect with me personally, I’d love that too!

I loved this passage! The guidance about prayer was helpful, but the part that struck me in this passage was the part that said "This message has been bearing fruit and growing among you since the day you heard and truly understood God’s grace." (Common English Bible) As someone who is tentatively feeling out Christianity again, it struck me that the message has been in my heart since childhood, and maybe now is the time that I'm ready to work to truly understand it. I'd love a prayer partner, or just someone to discuss these readings with, so email me if you like! lsmith0390 [at] gmail [dot] com :)

Something interesting i wanted to share with you guys, i read this devotional while on skype with my boyfriend. we were doing our own things so we werent really talking all that much, anyways i pulled out my journal and decided to write down the four things to pray for – with the prayer partner. Now i know it says pair up with a friend and pray for this person but for some reason i decided to ask my boyfriend to help me in picking someone to pray for. Thinking he would give me the name of one of my friends/closest friends he tells me pray for the person that you dislike the most. He gave me the name that i choose not to share on here but it really caused a resistance in me like no way im not gonna do that (even though i agreed with him) especially since that person wont be praying for me. Then i truly felt in my spirit that God wanted to challenge me with this. Since the beginning of this devo says to ask God to soften our hearts i figured how appropriate would this be to accept the challenge & let God mold me through this. Just thought it was interesting how God works in mysterious ways with challenging us!

God bless you girls and enjoy this week of prayer with your partners!

I make prayer lists from time to time. I keep them in my journal. Since most of my friends don't specifically ask for me to pray for them (they just assume I will & I do) I just ask that God bless them and help them overcome anything that they are struggling with. If anyone wants to be prayer partners please feel free to let me know. I think this will be a great way to learn and grow while always thinking of others and wanting them to be blessed as well.

It has been hard to find a group, even one, woman who I can relate to and share my life, spiritual and otherwise. Just need a friend, or two! So I have decided to reach out! I am missing accountability HUGELY in my life. I have been praying for it desperately. So glad to have found SRT.

I’d love a prayer partner this week and possibly beyond! If anyone is looking for a partner, please email me at karanpeterson6@gmail.com!

Sweet sisters, I'm always hesitant to post links because it can sometimes leave me feeling icky inside but I really want to share this. My church did a series in the summer and one topic we covered was on prayer. God has done wonders in my heart over the past few years and I absolutely love prayer but even already having that love deep in my heart this sermon impacted my heart. http://www.churchonthewestside.com/qry/page.taf?i… I also (cue icky stomach feeling over sharing something by myself) wrote a post over at a blog I write for sometimes on increasing prayer. I hope it blesses you sisters. http://www.be-lovedblog.com/2012/06/26/spiritual-

Nadine, your blog post and suggestions on increasing prayer brought tears to my eyes. Just as Jesus said “get thee behind me, Satan” you need to say “Get behind me, icky feeling in my stomach”. Satan did NOT want you to post the links. I’m very grateful you did

Good morning friends! I have been longing for a prayer partner. I often begin praying for others & then just slip into praying for myself. How selfish! God convicted me of that this morning and how I tell people I’ll pray for them and then end up either forgetting or never checking back with them to see how they are doing.

I’d love to have someone as my prayer partner. I really need that accountability. My email is bryantalys @ gmail . com or you can find me on twitter @alys_hejl

Also, what do you ladies use to keep track of the prayer requests people ask of you? I am horrible about knowing who I told I’d prayer for/what the request was & I’m looking for a way to help me remember.

Thank you ladies. It’s encouraging to see this community.

I too always feel like I don’t know how to pray properly. I feel secure in my one on one conversations but am insecure with praying in or for a group. I pray that He will guide and strengthen me in this area.

Have a blessed day EVERY ONE OF YOU!!!

Just my heart.

It's so cool to see how people are just eager to serve each other in this way! I've struggled with being consistent in praying for others and it's terrible! Having someone for accountability and friendship is nice, because you know how each other struggles with prayer. In recent years, I've really loved how much of a deeper relationship with my Savior has come from simply speaking my heart to him, praising him, and asking for guidance. It really is a sort of conversation! :)

Good morning my sisters!
I am so excited reading the lesson this morning
Then I read everyones comments. Buzzing about Jesus…
How happy he must be. I pray often but my prayers are usually target prayers
What about those we don’t pray for…. Jesus told us to pray without ceasing
I would most like prayer n the #’ 2. 4. And 6.
Currently I am facing some physical challanges as I continue to do God’s work
In ministry. It is my desire to be effective…. to yield fruit.
I would love to pray with someone while I am praying for u all

Today’s reading really hit me hard too. I am so thankful for the writers of #shereadstruth and for their discernment. I have read this chapter so many times but have never read it as a list of ways to pray for my brothers and sisters. I am definitely going to copy this into my prayer notebook. Thanks again for a great devotional!

164 Lana November 6, 2012 at 4:32 am

So often, I think I pray for specifics, i.e. a relative or friend is sick, someone is in need of financial relief, etc., but today's message and reading just resonates with me. It reminds me that prayer should be for everyone, even people I don't personally know, because we are all part of Christ's body and need intercessors to stand in the gaps for times when we may not know we need it.

If we all made a conscious effort to pray for one another's walk, how much stronger would we be as a collective whole and individually? Such a great reminder of how important prayer is, and I will do my best to improve my praying habits and start incorporating the prayers listed in today's message.

I was thinking the same thing! I can spend plenty of time in "casual" prayer, just talking to God through my day, but when I sit down for some real prayer time I often think, "well, what more can I say?" and become just lost for words. A list straight from Scripture is just what I needed!

I think numbers 3&4 really stood out to me as a challenge to pray for friends to honour God in their lives today and that therefore they will see Gods fruit in their lives. The more we serve and offer ourselves to him the more we see God at work in our lives.

Ps. There are some great apps that my friends and I use to set prayer times in the day that help me set aside time for god throughout the day and not only pray about my situation at that time but remember friends, family and church
