Girls! Ladies! Women! Sisters!

It’s a big day around here. We are so excited to share a few pieces of news with you.

1. First up – we start a new plan today! We prayed a good bit about where to head after Proverbs and the Lord put Galatians firmly on our hearts. We’ve been studying, reading, and praying and we are so excited to walk through this book with all of you that is chock-full of the Gospel.

2. We are launching our very first She Reads Truth plan on YouVersion today! Our entire plan – the breakdown of the reading, a short daily devotional, and a few questions for thought are all together in one place on YouVersion – which you can access via the app or the website. Not only that BUT in each daily reading from YouVersion, there is a link back to each daily post on our site – so you can easily interact with the community after reading each day.

Also – we know some of you have had trouble in the past getting to plans on YouVersion, so we wanted to make it super simple for you! Below is a little picture tutorial of exactly how you find the She Reads Truth plan! To start – either download the YouVersion app to your phone, or go to the website.

1. Open YouVersion. 2. Search for “She Reads Truth” 3. Select that beauty right there! 4. Hit “Start Plan” and join the fun!

3. We are giving away a ticket to the Influence Conference - coming up this fall in Indianapolis, IN. And, since there’s no time like the present, shall we jump into Galatians together right now?

First, a quick introduction to the book:

Galatians is a letter written by the apostle Paul to a collection of churches that he planted in Galatia on his first missionary journey with Barnabas. He’d been able to visit and check up on them with another ministry partner, Silas, in a second trip. The churches were primarily made up of gentile Christians, like most of us, and trouble started to arise when in Paul’s absence, some Jewish Christians arrived and began teaching a different “gospel”.

The Galatians were quickly misled to believe that they needed Jesus + rules to be Christians. They didn’t just mislead the new believers, they also attacked Paul to help prove their point. Thus, we get Galatians. A passionate letter from Paul reminding them of the true and beautiful Gospel they’d received and doing a little defense of his own ministry.

This book, like everything else we find in God’s Word, is super relevant for us as present day gentile Christians. We’re easily misled, we love adding rules, and we forget what makes a true disciple so quickly. We hope you’ll read along with us and fall back in love with the freedom, grace, love, and beauty of the Gospel that we have received through our Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ our Savior.Pleasing God or each other?

Galatians 1:1-10 | Pleasing God or each other?

Paul is simply an apostle addressing the churches in Galatia, and now us, as one who is experiencing the peace and grace that comes from the beautiful Gospel – the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins, by the will and for the glory of our Father. And we see immediately in Galatians that people then are just like people now (us) – people who quickly forget the truth of the gospel, who they were following, and are led away from great grace.

  • Is anything bewitching you?
  • Is there a person, a lie, a thought, a belief that is allowing you to believe anything other than the amazing news that you’ve been bought with the blood of Jesus for the pleasure and perfect will of God?
  • Have we begun to live in a way that we aim to please men rather than the one who authored such Good News for us?

See you in Galatians, sisters! And maybe even at Influence next month!

Blessings She Reads team and previous participants or newbies like me… I just finished with your 19 days of Fresh Start and before I knew what was next "Soul Detox" (which I kinda did with Pastor Craig on LifeChurch), I will be reading along but not doing with y'all cuz I clearly heard God tell me a week ago that I should look into studying and reading through Galatians! I was so glad to see that SheReads Truth had done this with YouVersion (Congrats and Yeah!!!) but also that it was/ IS still here for me to go/come back to and read. Even though, I am not doing it along with the community here, I know it will benefit me to read their reactions back at the time it was originally done(Sept. 2012)! I'm thankful and glad to be doing Galatians kinda with you for the next 15 days via YouVersion! (there was only one other on Galatians at YouVersion for 3 days, not quite enough for me). This has much more meat. I saw others online but SHE READS rocks and is my preference! God bless you! Keep doing all you're doing!

Thank you for doing Galatians!
Peggy

Thanks Jesyka! I did today (Day 2) but I feel kinda strange. I just wanted to encourage others that may do this like me at a later time to still read through the comments and leave what the Lord is showing them. Thank you for replying with encouragement and kindness.

You bet, Peggy! I love that people stumble on different studies at different times and think it is great that you are encouraging others to keep commenting! That's one of the best parts of the community-learning from each other!

okay, starting a bit late, but nevertheless, I've started! love reading your comments…I agree with many on the verse about "winning approval of human beings or of God" Ummmm when you put it that way, the question is really easy….why is it so hard IRL? Praying I remember these words in my everyday interactions!

Yay! So excited about this new plan and She Reads Truth right on YouVersion!
Oh yes! What a reminder! My Christian-walk is with Christ himself, not with anyone else, people are just a complement to my life, but He is my one and only commander-in-chief.
As there is only one Good News! I don't need anything else but the ONE who died for me.

I'm so excited for the new study, and am really psyched that the whole thing is available on YouVersion! I'm 7 hours ahead of the East Coast, so I ended up having to stay one day behind on the devotions in order to have new content every morning. It's great to be able to keep up now since I can do the YouVersion plan at my own pace!

The beginning of Galatians sounds like something that could have been written to me so many times – it feels as though every time things get really tough I throw my hands up in the air and give up instead of holding fast to faith and hope. And as for seeking the approval of man…yeah. It's amazing how much I still end up doing that when I go days without seeing anyone other than my husband or kids! Right now I'm 3 months postpartum after baby #3 and I'm really struggling with how long it's taking for the weight to start coming off. This is a great reminder to stop fixating on my waistline and fix my eyes on Jesus instead.

I have been thinking about the concept of "other" gospels than the one I first received based on this passage. How simple it is to add to the gospel sometimes. It is easy to get fixated on things that are, in and of themselves, totally fine, but take it a bit too far and adopt them as "gospel." Whether it is our political views, pre-trib vs. post trib, pre-destination vs. free will, young earth vs. old earth, organic vs. processed, etc…for example: "To be saved, we have to believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God who died for our sins and was raised on the third day AND the democratic party is the instrument of satan" (please "hear" my sarcasm here) or "To be saved we have to believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God who died for our sins and was raised on the third day AND that creation was literally 6 days…or we must believe and act just so and be good people….it is so common to "camp" out in these debates…and usually, the side we are "camping" in becomes our addition to the gospel. And that when we do this, it is devisive…the opposite of what we should be doing-coming together around our relationships with Jesus Christ. There are subtle ways that I "add" to the gospel. I need to remember that it is rather simple. It is good news. Whether I'm a vegan democrat who believes in a literal six day creation or a McDonald's loving republican who is SURE about how the rapture is going down. The gospel is the same either way.

I will be the first to admit that verse 10 really hit me today, I am so guilty of sometimes desiring the approval of man over God. I am ashamed to even write that as I know that it is displeasing to God. I have recently begun to feel extremely convicted about the role "man" plays in my life, God has been doing mighty pruning in my life of people who are not healthy for me, and it really has been freeing to know that Gods approval is much more important and worthy than mans!

Hmm, so am I living my life to honor Christ?! I sure hope so! Many times it's possible to think a kind thought as it is a judgement, isn't it? Influences in our lives play such a heavy role, don't they? Fill your life with junk, gossip, jealousy, and out it comes. Fill it with love, truth, and God's word, and you've got beauty. I'm excited to jump into this study and glad to be reminded today that Paul clearly says, "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. "(Galatians 1:10 NIV) it just can't be any more clear! I choose to practice being a great influence, even if I'm not always perfect.

Praise Jesus for giving me a body of believers online to share my love for our King! I have done a few of the bible studies but have never posted a response on the blog. I wanted to thank ALL of you for your sharing of the Word and how God is using it in your life. I have done a study of Galatians before and really enjoyed it so I am looking forward to this one.

One of the things that went through my mind is how easy it is to be deceived. I pray often for wisdom and discernment so as not to fall prey. I only want God's will for my life! I also want to seek wisdom that when I speak it is God sent. I have a tendency to speak before I think sometimes. As a Christian I know I am held to a higher standard (not that I shouldn't be). I do not want to misrepresent my King and the grace and mercy that he has shown to me.

We must continually pray that God will draw us closer to him. Thanks for letting me join you ladies on this journey through His word.

Why hello there ladies! I am beyond stoked to dive into this new study with all of you. Did anyone else tend to let reality fly out the window (spending far too much time refreshing the #SheReadsTruth home screen in order to find out the topic of the new study)? No?….uh, me neither. Who would ever be that over the top to do this? Cough.Cough.
Confession time? I did. In fact, my little Dell almost gave under the pressure (got to remember to plug those charger cords in) haha.
No seriously, I am looking forward to what God is going to reveal to all of our hearts as we delve into this letter.
I know a couple of pieces that are shouting louder than all the rest would be Galations 1v6-10. I won't type all of the verses out, but o would encourage you to read the MSG version of these truths. It truly is gut wrenching to think of how easily we can be swayed by 'the shiny things' in this life. Whether it be a screwed vision, a sweeter tasting word, or a deceptive smile, they are all nothing but bold faced LIES.
The only true happiness, peace, joy, hope, love, & ultimately life is found in His Love Letter. No matter how pretty the world's stationary may seem. No matter how crisp & clean the edges of the paper seem (I am a little bit of a neat freak when it comes to crisp & cleans pages in a book. No dog ears found here), their only going to deceive & destroy.
Tonight I pray that God will open our eyes, shield our hearts, & attune our ears to only take in His truth in the coming days.

Much love.
A
Alyssa

I am struck with verse 6 "I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel."

First, I have to say I love the boldness and how blunt Paul is in this letter. His passion spills over into every word and his zeal is infectious. He believes in the Truth and worries for all who are straying from that truth .
In this verse, he is talking about the different gospels that the Galatians were turning to, but the way I see this, we ALL find different gospels that we turn to from time to time that takes us away from the Truth of God.
Pop culture itself is a constant pull away from our truth. Lies. Gossip. Judgement. Vanity. We may follow the Bible and be in love with Jesus, but there are moments when we let the outside gospels in.
Gospel itself is defined as something that is considered of prime importance, something that is true and believed. It is so important that our ONLY Gospel be the truth of Jesus Christ and that we guard our hearts from the mistruths of our secular run world.

We, like Paul, MUST speak the truth with confidence, passion, and conviction.

I too was convicted by verse 10. Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? I am sooo careful to try & not offended anyone, thinking God will understand. I've got to reverse that & be careful to not offend God!!

Reply

18 Janette September 18, 2012 at 7:58 am

That reversal is so hard!! Why is it so easy for us to be concerned for the feelings of others and not stick to our convictions about who God calls us to be? Praying for you, Kim, and me as I try to do this, too!

Posted on You know, I had a similar pbleorm in reverse. I have two boys and the eldest (age 5) is fascinated with cooking, so me and his Mom wanted to get him an Easy Bake Oven for his birthday last February. However, they only came in pink. We knew he wouldn’t care and I really didn’t think it was a pbleorm, but it still gave me pause. We ended up not getting him one for another reason (all of the mixes are made in factories that have peanut exposures and he’s allergic), but it still kinda bugged me that cooking was considered a girls-only activity.

Like so many above, I'm super excited for this new plan! Proverbs was my first one with SheReadsTruth and this is my first comment, jumping with both feet this time. I think for me what stuck out was that so often, I can be one of the "men" I'm trying to please. I need to live my life to please God, not others and not just myself.

Reply

21 Alys Hejl September 17, 2012 at 2:42 pm

Vs. 10 also stuck out to me. I have realized lately that my life is in a really cool place, but a place I never thought I'd be. I am 23, graduated from UT in May, had a baby in Aug. and have been married for almost 2 years now. When I thought of my "future" in High School it was always successful, but based upon the world's standards. I never realized how much I struggled with the world's standards vs. God's standards until this season of my life. I have struggled knowing that I have worth or that I can be successful with this new season. What are somethings that you ladies do when you have this problem? I want to RUN after God's approval, but sometimes feel stuck as to how to get started. Seeking approval from men is one of the root idols of my heart, so when someone speaks negatively about what I am doing/where I am at in life it really knocks me down. Unfortunately this happens pretty often from one of the people I am around on a frequent basis and this time it's kind of sent me into a tailspin on whether or not I am worthy and how I can make myself "successful." Man I needed this truth today! Thank you for going through Galatians!! It's one of my favorite chapters in the Bible.

Also I entered the giveaway. It'd be such a huge blessing to be able to go!

I love verse 10! “If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.” My sole purpose in life is to please my heavenly father and sometimes I lost focus. Its not about what people say or think it’s about what God knows about me. Reading these verses put things in perspective for me. God is so good!

This is my first shereadstruth plan and I'm so excited to dive in! The accountability and support found here is something that will be so good for me. I am a seminary student and a pastor and so often I forget to simply study God's word… I get so consumed with lesson planning, homework assignments, and reading the Bible for "work" that I don't spend nearly enough time diving in to feed my own relationship with God. This is already so encouraging and I'm ready to go! Thanks to my sweet friend Michelle for her shereadstruth posts and the inspiration to join.

As for my thoughts on our first reading, I think about how Paul calls himself God's servant. What does it mean for us to be servants of God and not of man? I can think of so many areas in which I feel like a servant than take precedence over my relationship with God… my marriage, my job, my academics…. but to serve the most HIGH God should be my first concern, my first calling. I forget that so often. My prayer today is to remember who it is that I serve… and that I would serve God first in my life, and fully surrender my life, my choices, and my actions to God alone.

I am so thankful for this blog and the reading plans that have been posted the last several months. It has really helped me stay consistently in the Word, providing accountability for me. Thanks, ladies!

And I'm super excited about Galatians…the reminder to live our lives faithfully in light of the truth of the gospel. I was struck specifically in this first reading that the Lord Jesus Christ gave Himself that we might be delivered from this present evil age. (1:4) Today we live in a world that is full of evil and it is not the expectation of our God that we succumb to this evil. He is the One who overcame death so that we might, too, be overcomers. There is power in my life to be victorious over evil because He is in my life, He has given me the Holy Spirit to seal me…when will I realize that He is the power in my life to be faithful and an overcomer of sin and evil in my life? Or will I continue to live in bondage of sin? May we all realize that we have already been set free from sin by the power of the gospel. May we choose to live in such a way that the truth of the gospel reigns in our lives!

Verses 6 and 7 stand out to me as bold reminders as to WHY it is so crucial for us to be soaking in God's Word daily!

"I am shocked that you have so quickly turned from God, who chose you because of his wonderful kindness. You have believed another message, when there is really only one true message…" (CEV)

We live in an evil world. Unfortunately, even some churches are watering down the gospel in order to not offend anyone. We MUST know the TRUTH of God's Word so that WE are not misled.

Love this new plan and am looking forward to going through a little guided Galations! The verse that struck me was 10 – "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ."

Immediately upon reading this the Lord put on my heart something I've always struggled with as a Christian – being "good enough" in the eyes of society, but not 100% following the Lord and His truth. I feel as if sometimes I get a little too comfortable with being considered a good person by the world's standards, and that leaves me feeling justified in not being who the Lord has called me to be – this is definitely seeking the approval of human beings rather than the approval of God.

Today I am going to work to please my heavenly father, rather than to appease society. I'm praying that the Lord will help show me the difference, and that He blesses each one of your days!

The verse really standing out to me today is verse 4. "Jesus rescued us from this PRESENT EVIL WORLD, by offering himself as a sacrifice for our sins…" For me this confirms that whatever is in the Bible is just as important for me as it was for the Galatians all those thousands of years ago! This world is filled with people and things waiting to trip us up and trying to convince us we need anything other than God and his forgiveness!

"On Jesus CHrist the solid rock I stand! All other ground is sinking sand!"

Galatians is one of my faves, so I am *purty* darn excited about this! :)
My thoughts on today's Scripture…
It shows the importance of being discerning in all things…to test everything we come across because people who claim to be followers of Christ can mislead us.
Oh and the "people-pleaser" in me cringes at Paul's last statement. Talk about good conviction of the Holy Spirit! I love how Jesus catches us in those moments of depending on others approvals instead of being simply satisfied in His alone. (checking my likes on Facebook/Instagram, etc)
Looking forward to this journey with you girls! :) xo

What I say, do, my actions… Is it for the popular vote? Or God-commissioned?

Am I winning the approval of people? Or God? Pleasing people? Or am I a servant of God?

This was such an amazing way to start off the week! Let us be God-commissioned! :)

I am SO excited for this new plan. Since joining in with SheReadsTruth I've read so much of God's Word, and for the first time, I've read entire books instead of little chapters/verses. It's incredible the difference being immersed in His Word can do to ones life!

I wish the ladies entering the competition the best of luck, I wish I was in the US and could attend!!

Samantha…it IS an amazing gift we have to read His Word in its entirety and not just bits and pieces. :)

Who set their alarm for 12:30 last night so she could check the website and see what the knew plan would be?  THIS GIRL!  I’ve thought about it all weekend and have prayed along side you as you sought the Lord about it like you asked us to do on Twitter.  I am thrilled to be reading Galatians with you all!  After I checked the website and saw the new plan, I was so excited I couldn’t get back to sleep so I prayed over us, our leaders and writers on this site, and our time together in Galatians.  Oh, He is enough!  Galatians tells us of a pure freedom that proves Him to be enough.  I’m so in love with you all already.__Here are my thoughts on todays readings:_In verses 3-5, Paul describes the gospel that God is so zealous to protect.  I love how he ends those verses with an outburst of praise.  Is there any other response?  As I wrote each piece of the gospel in my journal from these verses today, my heart wanted to explode with worship.  I can imagine the drive to work today will be done with one hand on the wheel and one hand in the air.  Don’t laugh, you know you’ve done it too!!! :)_God gave me this for my journal today:  Any other thing I put confidence in is no gospel at all.  A big thing I put confidence in is what people think of me.  How nice of God to put these two thoughts together in one chapter…just for me.  _Once again, He is enough.  _Have a great week, girls.  I’m bathing you in prayer today.

Hi! Can’t wait for the new plan but I’m having trouble finding she reads truth in youversion… I’m following directions above… Any hints? I am doing it from my app on the iPhone.
Thank you!
Maria

I had trouble at first, when I typed in "she reads truth" in the search bar in Youversion. But then I tried shereadstruth and it popped up. She Reads Truth:Galations

I hope that helps!

You can also search "Galatians" in the "browse plans" section of the app – it will turn up ours and one other. Ours is a 14-day plan if that helps. Glad to have you with us!

I'm so excited to be starting a new plan & Galatians seems like a great place to go next! In my Bible (a woman's Bible), the authors added a little insert next to verse 10 about dieting, which really struck a chord with me. They asked "why do many of us diet? Is my goal when I diet to gain human approval or to please God by improving my health?" Today women are bombarded with all sorts of new diet fads and crazes and I am definitely one who succumbs to the pressure to try them all and see what works. But if I really ask myself why I am doing them, like I did this morning, it unfortunately is more to people-please than to please God by improving my health. I am healthy, I am a healthy weight, so why am I trying each and every new diet out there if it isn't to try and please others? I was a good lesson and something I definitely need to start being aware of.

Happy Monday to everyone =)

What Bible is that?! I'd be interested to add it to my collection. It's anecdotes like that one that makes it easier to relate His teachings to my life. Context!!!

Thank you for that reminder, Allie. I have been loosing weight for my health but recently my body has stopped loosing and I am frustrated. Through several different Christian sites recently, God seems to be pointing out that I am doing this for worldly reasons and I am where I need to be!

I love this Allie! So true. I struggle with my weight and link it to my happiness. I am an aspiring missionary and instead of for others, losing weight and getting healthy will be a devotion to God. Thanks for your perspective!

I'm really struggling with my weight at the moment and this is such a good reminder that my aim shouldn't be fitting in with how society says I should look but to be as healthy as I can be so that I am able to do everything God wants me to do!!!! Thank you so much for sharing!!! Xxx

So happy about this! Thanks for the background info. on the story of Paul/Galatians. I have been in church pretty much all my life but am ashamed to admit I don't know as much about The Bible as I should. It was so helpful to get a little "refresher course" on this chapter! Happy Monday to all! :)
